7 APPLY YOUR LEARNING – WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO! Read the poem together and focus on the imagery and metaphors – explore their effects. Try to decide on the following: What is the poem about? What is the poet’s attitude towards what she is exploring? Which metaphor(s) do you find particularly striking? Why? HOW ARE YOU GOING TO APPROACH ANALYSING THIS POEM? Sometimes metaphors can be extended throughout a section or a whole text – they may be repeated, or several aspects of the comparison may be developed. - Is ‘The Great Gatsby’ about a man with a dream? - Can you identify a repeated metaphor in ‘On Looking into the Eyes of a Demon Lover’?HOMEWORK Find a definition of the word ‘analogy’ and come up with one example.
