Desert Biome
4
Characteristics of a desert
Dry (less than 25cm of precipitation a year) Extreme temperatures Mineral rich Sand, rocks, barren Rain comes in the form of sudden thunderstorms, flash floods
5
Desert classifications
1) Hot Desert- HOT most of the year. Ex. Sahara, Gobi, Sonoran 2) Cold Desert- COOLER temps but generally still receive little precipitation throughout the year. Ex. Sierras, Rocky Mts.
6
Desert Limiting Factors
1) Lack of Water (dry) 2) Extreme temperature ranges
7
Desert adaptations Spines on cactus Roots (deep to get to water)
Roots (shallow and fanned out) Scales/Shells (reduce water loss) Burrowing organisms Nocturnal Big ears Small leaves
