Lesson 59 Bookmaking: Book Binding Expectations 1. Listen carefully 2. Work hard 3. Be responsible

Review We studied the two different illustration techniques used by Tomie dePaola and Quentin Blake. Every illustrator has their own style and inspiration. We can be inspired by other illustrators, just like we are inspired to write different types of stories by reading different authors.

Bookmaking What is a paperback and a hardback? What can I do to make my book last longer? But how can I keep it together?

Bookmaking: Book Binding How do pages stay together in a book? What are some ways we could make our own book that has covers and pages? When we put our final finished product together and it has a front and back cover with the pages together that is called binding.

Bookmaking: Book Binding http://youtu.be/mfcEFEaxaLs How are books made today? What new words are used in the video of book making? Today we'll learn 3 ways to bind a book.

Bookmaking: Book Binding Easy book binding: Punch or poke two or three holes on the side of your book. Thread string, ribbon, yarn, twine, or even a thin vine and tie a small bow at each hole.

Bookmaking: Book Binding Sewing unfolded pages: Punch or poke holes on the side of your book. Sew through the holes, then sew back the other way looping around the spine. Watch as I bind my book with this technique.

Bookmaking: Book Binding Sewing folded pages: Stack several pages and fold in half. Punch or poke holes on the fold of your papers. Make two folds in the center of a sturdy paper to create a spine. Punch holes at the top and bottom of the spine. Thread the string through the spine and tie. Watch as I demonstrate.

Bookmaking: Book Binding We have learned how to use the writer's process to take a book from an idea all the way to a bound finished product! We can also bound books to use as journals or sketchbooks.

Good Listener Eyes are watching. Ears are listening. Lips are closed. Hands are still. Feet are quiet.

Read Aloud: Remember the strategies good readers use while I read aloud to you! Book: The Little Prince By: Antoine De Saint-Exupery Chapter 26-27

Assignment: 1. Choose one method to bind your book. 2. Share your book with a friend or family member!
