Anthony Burns by Virginia Hamilton is a novel about the fugitive slave act and Anthony Burns trying to overcome it. Anthony Burns is a slave who is familiar with what Ngugi calls “The Cultural Bomb.” This is a process in which a person can “annihilate another person’s belief in his name, in his language, in his environment, in his heritage of struggle, in his unity with others, and in his capacity. Anthony Burns was not able to overcome “The Cultural Bomb” by himself. He needed the help of others. STUDENT 1’S Intro Paragraph 1

16 THE EDUCATION TRUST SCAFFOLDING THE INTRODUCTION Going inside yourself doesn’t work because when you come back out you still have to face the consequences. Anthony Burns by Virginia Hamilton tells the life story of a young slave. Anthony Burns is a slave who experienced what Nugugi called the cultural bomb. “The cultural bomb is to annihilate a people’s belief in their names, languages, environment, heritage of struggle, unity, capacity, and ultimately in themselves.” Going inside yourself would not stop people’s belief or what they think of you. If a slave really wants to stop the cultural bomb, the person needs to make a plan and to get moving because slaves have no power. STUDENT 2’S Intro Paragraph 1

17 THE EDUCATION TRUST SCAFFOLDING THE INTRODUCTION A writer’s beginning can be rooted almost anywhere; a devastating experience, a triumph, an inspirational teacher or idol--any and all of these can compel a child to write. The most common cause however, is a “feeling of insatiability “when it comes to books. Children whose “only fear [is] that of books coming to an end” grow up to write their own, so that the end never has to come. In this passage from her autobiography, One Writer’s Beginnings, Eudora Welty explores the origin of her drive to write. The language she employs to relate anecdotes of her early childhood love affair with reading is invested with the same passion and value that she applied to books.
