2 Chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay affect about 20 to 30% of children and adolescents in California, which leads to more absenteeism and lower school performance ( Dewey JD. Reviewing the relationship between school factors and substance use for elementary, middle, and high school students. Journal of Primary Prevention 1999: 19(3):1777 225. Swingle CA. The relationship between health of school-age children and learning implications for schools. Lansing, MI; Michigan Department of School Health; 19997). Proper nutrition improves academic, behavioral, and emotional functioning and leads to increased math grades, lowered absenteeism and improved behavior ( USDHHS. Guidelines for school health programs to promote lifelong healthy eating. MMWR Weekly Report. June 14, 1996). Students who are more physically fit are more likely to do well on state standardized tests, have better attendance, and have fewer disciplinary problems at school ( Texas Education Agency. Physically Fit Students More Likely to Do Well in School. 2009). Mental health, teen pregnancy, chronic conditions, and dental disease are top health concerns that affect Attendance (In Class, Ready to Learn? Why and How to Improve Student Attendance) In the National Health Interview Survey, children rated by their parents as having poor health are seven times more likely to miss 11 or more school days a year due to injury or illness than children rated by their parents as having good health (Dey & Bloom, 2005). 3 Does your school have a full-time nurse? Who monitors vaccination records? Do students know how to properly cover their mouths when they sneeze/cough? Are signs posted in/near restrooms reminding students of proper hand washing? Are students encouraged to eat healthy snacks? Are healthy habits taught at your school?
