Physikalische Beschreibungen von Geräteteilen und Geräten in technischem Englisch David Burkhart Vortrag für tekom-Mitte Fulda, 11. September, 2013

Nouns: device + equipment Gerät = device Geräte = Gerätepark = equipment

3 Nouns: examples measurement equipment, test equipment... Gerät = piece of equipment 3

4 Nouns: bad example Geräte = Gerätepark = equipment equipments 4

Nouns: device + equipment to equip; equipped The sensors must be equipped with a heater before they are installed. The airplane comes fully equipped with collision- avoidance equipment.

Nouns: housing... housing case casing enclosure package body cabinet...

7 Nouns: housing... Which one? 7

Nouns: housing... housing case: PC case, transistor case casing enclosure package: IC package body cabinet...

Nouns: housing parts top, bottom, left side, right side front panel, back panel = rear panel

Nouns: parts Base = Boden Base plate Bar (Bügel) A long piece of round metal. Typically, a bar is bent at both ends. Rod (Stange) A bar which is straight.

Nouns: removing material Cut-out ⇔ hole Most general terms Something is not there/something is removed Cut-out Any shape Hole Usually round

Nouns: removing material The cabinet has many long, narrow holes on the side, to cool the device. hole cut-out opening bore notch slot indentation...

Nouns: removing material bore (Bohrloch, Bohrung, Durchmesser von Rohren) Round hole Drilled to an exact diameter Goes all the way through the material

Nouns: removing material

15 Nouns: removing material The opening in the middle accomodates a meter. Mounting holes are placed to the left and right of the opening for the meter. 15 (drawing)

Nouns: removing material notch (Einkerbung, Ausfräsung) Rectangular or V-shaped piece Cut out of an edge or surface

Nouns: removing material slot (Schlitz) A long, narrow opening Typically in a side or top panel of a device Slots allow an exchange of air in a device ☞ ventilation slots (Lüftungsschlitze)

Nouns: removing material indentation (Einkerbung, Einbuchtung) A cut or mark On the edge or surface of something An indentation is often a notch that is short and possibly deep.

Nouns: removing material dent (Delle) Similar to an indentation A dent is always unwanted. When two cars collide, the result is a dent.

Nouns: removing material recess (Aussparung) A space that is set back. It can be part of a design, to accommodate something that is stored there. A recess in a radio housing creates a battery compartment.

Nouns: removing material groove (Rille, Ritze) “A long, narrow cut in the surface of something hard” - Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary Usually much longer than a notch Does not go all the way through the material

Nouns: removing material tear (Riss) A long, thin break in solid material Result of an undesired process or failure If very thin: fissure, hair crack or hairline crack (Haarriss)

Nouns: removing material crack (Sprung) Considerable force is applied Material is typically wood or glass Material splits into two or more pieces

Nouns: removing material cut-out, bore, notch, slot, indentation, recess Cut-out: any shape Bore: round; drilled to exact diameter; goes all way thru Notch: rectangular or V-shaped piece; from edge/surface Slot: long, narrow opening Indentation: cut or mark, on the edge or surface Recess: a space that is set back

Nouns: providing support rod (Stange) A bar which is straight, not bent A connecting rod is a rod that transmits motion.

Nouns: providing support shaft (Achse, Welle) “Rotating or oscillating round, straight bar for transmitting motion and torque, usually supported on bearings (Lager) …” (source: www.dictionary.com)www.dictionary.com

Nouns: providing support strut (Verstrebung) A support which resists longitudinal compression.

Nouns: providing support prong (Zacke) A “thin, pointed, projecting part” (source: www.dictionary.com)www.dictionary.com

Nouns: providing support rod, shaft, strut, prong Rod: bar which is straight, not bent Shaft: rotating, round, straight bar Strut: resists longitudinal compression Prong: thin, projecting part (fingers)

Nouns: providing support collar, flange, lip Collar (Kragen): “ring or flange, as on rods or pipes, to prevent sideward motion, to connect parts, etc.” Flange (Flansch): “projecting rim, collar or ring on a shaft, pipe, machine housing, etc.” (www. dictionary.com) Lip (Lippe): “projecting edge on a container or other hollow object” (www. dictionary.com)

Nouns: input devices key, button, pushbutton Key (Taste): input data. Part of a keyboard Button (Knopf): switch to control a machine Pushbutton (Taster): stays in the position to which it was switched

Nouns: exercise You can obtain help by pressing the F1 button.

Nouns: input devices knob, lever Knob (Drehknopf, Einstellknopf): analog input, to change the settings for a device Lever (Hebel): controls some part of a device

Nouns: dip, bump Dip (Einsattelung, Delle): a surface goes down, or inward Bump (Erhebung): a small hill on an otherwise flat surface. Surface goes up, or outward

Nouns: exercise In the middle, the top panel dips up.

Nouns: strip, stripe Strip (Streifen): can be all by itself. An example is a strip of electrician’s tape. Stripe (Streifen): part of a larger ensemble. An example is the stripes on a flag.

Nouns: exercise Cover the solder joint with a stripe of electrician’s tape.

Nouns: exercise A round shaft (or rod) is shown; one end terminates in a sharp tip. The other end is flat (blunt). There is a V- shaped indentation on one side of the shaft, which penetrates approximately one-third of the diameter of the shaft. This indentation is located half-way between the blunt end and the beginning of the tip. The length of the shaft is about five times greater than its diameter.

Nouns: exercise The illustration shows a cylinder with a concentric bore. There is a collar (or flange) at the lower end of the cylinder. The cylinder’s diameter is greater than its length. That is, the cylinder is fairly flat.

Nouns: exercise aaaa

Nouns: exercise The object in the illustration consists of two basic parts. One part is a long shaft. At one end, this shaft terminates in threads. The other end is flatter (it dips down) and is attached to the lower end of the other part, which is a knurled, flat cylinder. The cylinder’s longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The top of the cylinder contains numerous holes, arranged in concentric circles. The entire object has a silver chrome surface.

Nouns: exercise The front panel of the equipments has a series of round buttons. They are knurled, so that the users fingers do not slip. The housing consists of top-, bottom- and side-panels, plus rubber feet and a metal frontplate. A series of some LEDs across the bottom of the frontplate allow the operator to control the status of the equipment.

Nouns: exercise aaaaaa

Nouns: exercises 1. A bar which is bent at both ends is called a shaft, bail or rod. 2. Don’t touch that knife! Its blade is very blunt. 3. The airplane was grounded, because mechanics found notches in the wing. 4. The handle of the electric drill includes an indentation for the batteries.

Nouns: exercises 5. For equipment that dissipates much heat, the housing always has cracks which allow the hot air to escape. 6. Press the emergency stop key immediately if the workpiece breaks. 7. He hit one end of the piece of wood with an ax, creating a slot.
