3. (psst: we aren’t talking about the music.) Metals are classed as such based on physical properties. Shiny Malleable – material is one that can be pounded into shape Ductile – material is one that can be pulled out or drawn, into a long wire.

4. Conductor – ability to transmit heat or electricity Magnetic – attracted to magnets or can be made into magnets Chemical Properties Reactivity – how well it reacts with other chemicals Corrosion – the wearing away of a metal surface as metal oxide flakes off. (ex: rust)

5. A mixture of metals to make them stronger and more durable. Ex: Copper + Tin = Ex: Copper + Zinc = Ex: Iron + Carbon = Ex: Iron + Carbon + Chromium + Vanadium =

6. Group 1 on the periodic table (Mr. Fox’s Favorite) Never found as elements in nature because they react REALLY fast. Very soft and shiny. (can cut them with a plastic knife) Sodium and potassium essential for life! React violently in WATER! 1 valence electron

8. Group 2 on the table Still reactive enough not to be found as elements in nature. Properties: fairly hard, bright white, and a good conductor 2 most common = magnesium and calcium Magnesium + aluminum = ladders and airplane parts. Light weight and STRONG!

9. Groups 3 – 12 Bridge the highly reactive metals and the less reactive metals. Very slow to react because they are stable Hard to tell apart from each other Hard, Shiny and great conductors Ex: Gold, Copper, Iron, Silver Mercury is liquid at room temperature

10. Groups 13 – 16 VERY slow to react Ex: Aluminum, Lead, tin

11. Rare earth elements Lanthanides – soft malleable, shiny and HIGH conductivity. Used in super conductors! Actinides – Thorium (Th) and Uranium (U) only ones found in earth All the rest are made in labs!
