2 What is Bullying? There are three defining characteristics:  1. intentional  2. Repeated  3. Power Imbalance

3 Types Of Bullying  Verbal  Physical  Indirect (Behind your back)  Cyber bullying

4 Who’s Involved In Bullying? Bystander Victim bully

5 Warning Signs of bullying  Unusually sad, moody, anxious, lonely, or depressed  Decline in school achievement  Thoughts of suicide

7 Why people don’t tell?  Want to belong  Don’t recognize conflict as bullying  Are embarrassed  Don’t want to appear weak  Believe they deserve it

8 What you should tell the victim.  You are not responsible for a bully’s behavior.  Don’t respond to bullies by giving in, getting upset, or fighting back—this will encourage them.  Sometimes the best response is no response— just walk away.

9  Your involvement makes a difference.  Stand up for the person being bullied.  Don’t join in.  Help the victim walk away.  Encourage other bystanders to help the victim.  Get help from a trusted adult.

10 You can Stop Bullying  Do NOT Bully  Do NOT encourage bullying or be a bystander  Tell an adult parent, relative, neighbor librarian, pastor or friend  Get 2 or 3 friends/bystanders to tell the bully to stop  If you can, walk over to the victim and just STAND with him or her.
