9 INTRODUCTION TO GSM R

10 GSM-R MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
GSM-R = GSM + ASCI (Advance Speech Call Items) The ASCI gives possibility in a traditional GSM network to offer to communications to closed groups users. These communications can be limited to precise zones. These communications require one channel of traffic by group of user. Priority and preemption: The GSM-R can manage several levels of priority of call; This gives the possibility where necessary to generate calls which will automatically allocate the necessary radio resources . (by releasing the channels whose level of priority is lower)

13 DETAILS OF THE GSM-R FUNCTIONS

14 FONCTIONS GSM-R TELECOM SERVICES (ASCI)
EMLPP Enhanced Multi-Level Precedence and Pre-emption. TELECOM SERVICES (ASCI) VBS Voice Broadcast Service. VGCS Voice Group Call Service. Functional addressing A term used to describe the process of addressing a call using a number representing the function a user is performing, rather than a number identifying the user’s terminal equipment. Functional number The full number used within the functional addressing scheme to identify an end user/system by function or role. OPERATIONAL ASPECTS Access matrix The access matrix defines which subscribers are able to contact which other subscribers within the EIRENE network. Location dependent addressing Location dependent addressing is provided to route calls for a given function to a destination number that is dependent upon the user's location. Confirmation of Railway emergency calls Emergency calls by mobiles is confirmed by a message sent to a ground-based central location.

15 VBS and VGCS: Group Calls
The Voice Broadcast Services (VBS) and the Voice Group Call Services (VGCS) permit the distribution of a voice call from: - users - dispatchers to a user group located in defined geographical zone in the same way as a preset group of dispatchers Voice Broadcast Service: A bidirectional channel is dedicated to the caller. A downlink unidirectional channel is dedicated to each cell of the calling zone (spectral efficiency) Group call: As for VBS, a unidirectional channel is allocated in each cell of the calling zone (spectral efficiency) The caller uses the uplink link of the unidirectional downlink channel allocated in its cell The speaker change is made with PTT (Push To Talk) GSM-R NETWORK MOBILE DISPATCHER

16 EMLPP: Priorities Enhanced multi-level precedence and pre-emption
Priority Levels Call settlings classes eMLPP Pre-emption capability Waiting lines management eMLPP Guaranties the access to the network resources for the priority calls even in case of congestion PRECEDENCE Priority allocation during call setting and for hand-overs PRE-EMPTION In case of resources lack, requisition of the resources used by a lower priority call THE SUPPLEMENTARY SERVICE EMLPP APPLIES TO Point to point voice and data calls Broadcast voice calls Group voice call

17 Functional Addressing
Controller GMSC HLRm IMSI MSISDN MSC/VLR Functional # CFU MSISDN Functional HLR FUNCTIONAL ADDRESSING ; The functional addressing permits to call a user or an application via a number which identifies its function (instead of its MSISDN) THE FUNCTION « FOLLOW-ME » of the GSM is used to: Registration, deregistration and interrogation of the functional numbers Train driver functional number sending The dispatcher calls a functional number in order to join the driver of a specific train

18 Functional Number Presentation
Dispatcher (CFN = ) FUNCTIONAL NUMBERS The presentation displays an information according to : The functional number of the recipient for the caller, And the functional number of the caller for the recipient The functional number is carried by the end-to-end supplementary service UUS1 Train Driver 234567 Train driver External Network or PABX GSM Access Dispatcher Train Driver (TFN = )

19 Priority Calls Every calls use the eMLPP service Group call
Data calls ETCS

20 DIRECT MODE (under standardisation)
The characteristics of the DMO are those of the GSM, The DMO frequency has to be chosen inside or closed to the trunked one The power of emission is 2 W in GSM and 1 W in DCS Dual watch: a DMO mobile can receive a call from the network when as long as there is no current talker Coverage Range higher than 6 km at light of sight Several hundred meters “indoor”

21 Direct Mode main performances
Voice: possible CODECS: FR, EFR, HR Data: SMS (160 char ack), 9,6 kb/s protected Supplementary services: Late Entry, Priority and Preemption, REC Spectrum efficiency: 7 calls in FR or EFR, 14 calls in HR over 200 Khz Call setup time: less than 300 ms
