What’s the situation in Suffolk? Out of 1265 respondents to the 2012 survey, the encouraging message was that 79% of respondents had been taught e-safety in school and 59% had been taught e-safety by their parents. 19% (240) of respondents claimed to have been cyber bullied and 71% of those reported being upset to some extent. There was also a clear difference between how males and females felt about being cyber bullied; 82% of girls reported being upset, compared to only 57% of boys.

Stop & think before you buy Stop and think before you buy your broadband service or internet enabled device. Who else will be using it? How secure does you connection need to be? Ask the retailer to set up parental controls and security settings for you before you leave the shop

Think internet smart, internet savvy Think you are as internet savvy as your 10 year old? Can your children get around your parental controls? Is the game you are about to buy age appropriate? www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents – internet advice for parents www.askaboutgames.com – advice and information on how computer games are classified

Enjoy the internet safely Enjoy the internet but be careful what sites you visit. They can contain harmful content such as phishing malware which attempt to access personal details such as your bank account. Adjust the security settings in your internet browser to make sure that you only visit ‘safe’ websites Set up the security software on your pc, tablet or mobile to scan websites and apps before they open/download

Posting can be fun Posting can be fun but make sure you don’t post anything you will regret later! Don’t use offensive language or pictures you wouldn’t want your boss or a work colleague to see. To keep control over photos change the privacy settings in Facebook so that people cannot tag you in their photographs – click on the cog icon

Share only what you’re comfortable with If in doubt, don ’ t share. Remember that your Facebook friends could also share pictures of you with others. So review your privacy settings on a regular basis. Go to www.facebook.com/help/privacy for instructions on how to change your privacy settings

Share only what you are comfortable – and if in doubt, don’t!
