3 Essential Nutrients (Please start your notes on the right page) Carbohydrates Molecules of Carbon, Hydrogen & Oxygen Simple carbs = sugars Complex carbs = chain of sugar molecules that need to be broken down Fiber = complex carb that your body cannot break down

4 Fats Molecules of C, H & O Dense energy > twice carb energy Part of cell membrane Saturated Fats = solid at room temp. Unsaturated Fats = liquid at room temp. Trans Fats = vegetable oil with hydrogen added Cholesterol = found in fats, made by your liver

5 Proteins Made of long chains of amino acids Needed to build tissue (growth and repair) Complete Protein = from animals Incomplete Protein = from plants, missing essential amino acid(s)

6 Vitamins, Minerals, Water: all needed for chemical reactions Vitamins Need only small amounts Fat-Soluble = dissolves in fat Water-Soluble = dissolves in water Minerals Not made by living things Water Also helps transport substances, regulate temperature and remove wastes
