Alternative Energy Sources Ch. 6

Europe is the only continent without a desert

Renewable Energy Sources are replaced in nature almost as fast as they are used up. Examples: water power, wind power, solar energy, geothermal energy

Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated that in 2013 about 10% of world marketed energy consumption is from renewable energy sources.

EIA also estimated that in 2013 about 19% of world electricity generation was from renewable energy

Water Power Major use of water power is to create electricity-called hydroelectric power (hydro=water) Major use of water power is to create electricity-called hydroelectric power (hydro=water) Positive: Most efficient way to produce electricity. Turbine blades turned directly by the water. Positive: Most efficient way to produce electricity. Turbine blades turned directly by the water.

Wind Power Wind Mills convert wind to energy. Wind Mills convert wind to energy. Used in areas where the wind is strong and consistent. Used in areas where the wind is strong and consistent. Disadvantages: Wind is inconsistent, noisy, and can interfere with television and radio reception. Problems with storing the energy produced for later use. 9 Solar Power Solar energy uses the sun to produce heat and electricity. Solar energy uses the sun to produce heat and electricity.

Solar cells – convert sunlight into electricity. Solar cells – convert sunlight into electricity. Disadvantage: Large area needed for the panels, sun is inconsistent year round. Disadvantage: Large area needed for the panels, sun is inconsistent year round.

Geothermal Energy: Geothermal energy uses heat rocks buried deep below earth’s surface to generate electricity. Geothermal energy uses heat from rocks buried deep below earth’s surface to generate electricity. Heat brought to earth’s surface by steam or hot water. Heat brought to earth’s surface by steam or hot water.

Earth's geothermal energy originates (20%) from the original formation of the planet and (80%) from radioactive decay of minerals. radioactive decay

In 2010, the United States led the world in geothermal electricity. The largest group of geothermal power plants is located in California. Geothermal power makes up approximately 18% of the country's electricity generation.

 Largest geothermal power plant in the world is located in California and is called the “Geysers”.  Advantages – no fuel needed, gives off very little pollution  Disadvantages – far from populated areas, expensive, and hot water taken out must be returned to ground to prevent collapse of ground.

Two convicts are locked in a cell. There is an unbarred window high up in the cell. No matter if they stand on the bed or one on top of the other they can't reach the window to escape. They then decide to tunnel out. However, they give up with the tunneling because it will take too long. Finally one of the convicts figures out how to escape from the cell. What is his plan?
