2 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.2 What is it? 4 th year option for IS, CS and SE students You gain academic credit for working as a ‘student-tutor’ with teachers in local schools You are paired with a teacher in your subject in a local school (your old school?) You visit regularly, probably one 2 or 3 hour session per week, aiming for about 36 hours over the year You start by observing, gradually supporting the teacher more

3 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.3 Personal project Finally you work on personal project(s) Should meet a perceived need in the school May be a novel method of presentation/demonstration/activity for a topic Agree with teacher, try out with pupils For example Workshop for a visit to HW for pupils using specific software Worksheets for topics at school Giving a lesson (preparation and delivery)

A better appreciation of the level of your expertise in your subject, and to build upon this through the process of explaining the subject’s core ideas and concepts to others. Learn to address the needs of individuals and to think about methods of presentation which are appropriate to the groups they are working with

7 Format Takes place over two semesters. We have a weekly lecture slot over both semesters, but only sometimes use these. Regularly at the beginning of each semester. Occasionally otherwise. You will have mentoring sessions about once a month. You will visit the school weekly from September/October to February/March. 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.7

9 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.9 One course, 2 semesters If doing CinC, you need to work more on your 4th year project (courses F20PA, F20PB, F20PC) in the first semester to compensate for spending some time on the UAS in the second. 11 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.11 Application and Interview There are a limited number of places on this course You will act as an ambassador for your subject and for the university, so you MUST be enthusiastic and committed to this course There will therefore be an application form that you must fill in, then you will be invited for a short interview Good interview practice for job-hunting next year! You should apply by early May and interviews will be held after exams.

12 CinC presentations Every year, the Computing in the Classroom students give presentations about their projects. This will be held on Wednesday, 18 th March at 1615 in 1:70 Open to all staff and students Do attend if you are thinking of taking the module. 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.12

14 08/09/2015UAS Advert1.14 Timetable Application /interview for acceptance (in May) Undergoing an Enhanced Disclosure (Disclosure Scotland) (over the summer) Training Sessions - working with children and conduct in the school environment (start Semester 1) Paired with a specific teacher at your host secondary school - identify your aims and objectives for the module. Spending about 2 -3 hours a week in school for about 12 weeks (32 - 36 hours), developing your role within the classroom (spread over semesters one and two) Regular tutorial/discussion sessions with the other students and lecturers Completion of Personal Projects Assessment of the course
