2 WHAT IS IT? A chance to use your up-to-the-minute skills in an external setting An opportunity to work with School teachers and students and impart your knowledge Commitment is approx 2 hours per week for 10 weeks It can be completed as a Credit-Based Elective or as Voluntary Community Service.

3 How will Monash support me? We will provide a suitable place for you depending on your area of expertise We will arrange an initial interview between the supervising teacher, the Science in Schools Coordinator and yourself You will be fully supported by the qualified staff (many are teachers) of the Monash Science Centre

4 Why do it? Develop and practise communication and interpersonal skills Gain experience in working with clients Make use of, and reinforce relevant aspects of your ICT knowledge Develop insights into learning and teaching processes Enhance problem solving and organisational skills Participate in a valued, rewarding and enjoyable undertaking Gain satisfaction from a community service Gain experience that is highly valued by employers, and that will enhance your CV

7 Course Structure The school program will take place as a 3- point elective, CSE3396 in your Computer Science coursework. This will count as one of your free electives - not as a computer science elective. The time commitment can be spread evenly over the School Term 3 (the first 8 weeks of our second semester), or negotiated with the school

8 Course Structure Compulsory Training for all candidates before placement in schools Duration will be 1-2 hours during July 2005 Training will deal with issues regarding children’s learning and classroom management Sessions conducted by highly experienced teachers

9 Course Structure Primary Placement option: become involved in Australian School Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics Project Candidates must attend training session before placement to qualify Candidates will be selected from the group who are committed to the Project Travel costs will be covered during placement Small budget allocated for teaching materials
