To understand how to conduct the core activities of mentoring (induction, lesson observation & feedback, convening mentor sessions and target setting through each). 2 What does your trainee need to know? First Day The School Day Dress code Coffee/ break arrangements Workspace Who’s Who (incl. 3 Constructing a Timetable Up to 8 hours of curriculum; PLUS 4 hours Further Professional Duties (= at least one Learning Support ; meeting cycle, tutor group time (secondary only), extra curricular) 4 hours of school based training (1 timetabled mentor, 1 PS, 1 M level research, 1 school experience directed tasks) Gradual staging of uptake: teach one hour by half term; eight hours by Xmas. Formal lesson observations should begin after October half term. New Mentor Training 2013

5 Feedback and mentoring Listen and elicit. Steer rather than direct. Keep the focus. Don’t overload… three strengths and three targets Allow time for reflection and thinking. New Mentor Training 2013

6 Convening Mentor Sessions Purpose of sessions: Review the week and progress towards targets. Prepare for the coming week, set new targets, discuss weekly focus (programme in subject handbooks.) School Based Training Log: Before the meeting trainee prepares section 1-3. After the meeting trainee completes: 4=A discussion record, 5=SMART targets,6= ‘to do’ list. Trainee passes to you for 7. You traffic-light, sign, adds (optional) comment. Return to trainee. Trainee sends copies to you, PT, us via VLE. New Mentor Training 2013

9 Keep communicating clearly! With your trainee: access to SoWs, resources, clear expectations; written observation notes on form. Expect from trainee: lesson plans 3 days ahead, copies of all School Based Training Logs and Lesson Observation Records (trainee also gives copies to PT, VLE and tracker), illness notification etc. New Mentor Training 2013

10 Keep communicating clearly! With Professional Tutor: a weekly chat, e mail. Early signalling of any concern. Ask for co-observation? 11 Master of Education (M Ed) Coaching & Mentoring module (30 credits) FREE to Sussex ITE mentors. Bring in up to 90 M credits Advanced Standing from prior M level PGCE. Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) 30 credit module available at half price.
