2  The history of Uintah County goes back to the dinosaur age. Evidences of Dinosaurs, such as bones and fossilized footprints, have been left in the region.  Freemont Indians and, more recently, the Ute Indians have inhabited this area.  The Ashley valley was named after William Henry Ashley, one of the early trappers, who traveled many times through the area. 4  First dinosaur bones were discovered in 1909  Paleontologists have found Apatosaurus, diplodocus, Allosaurus, and Stegosaurus bones have been found here  The Dinosaur national Monument was created in 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson. Dinosaurs!!

5  Ashley Valley (where Vernal is) lay outside the reservation. Ranchers and farmers had begun to settle there, and by 1880, the valley had enough people that the territorial legislature created Uintah County, taking most of the land from Wasatch County.  With the building of irrigation canals, other towns took root including Jensen, Maeser, and Tridell.
