5 Land Bridge Theory Ice Age caused Ocean levels to drop. Herds of animals moved across land bridge. Hunter Gathers followed herds as they traveled to hunt them. People began to spread out across North America

7 1.Paleo Indians: use the land bridge to travel 2.Archaic Indians: seasonal travel & discover the territory 3.Woodland Indians: villages begin and people settle down in smaller areas 4.Mississippi Indians: tribes begin and regional differences develop. Lots of evidence is left in order to study these people. Four Stages of Mans Settlement

8 How did Man stop moving? Man stop moving and began to plant their food to supplement hunting. Irrigation: watering crops by channeling water from rivers and streams. Began to grow a surplus: more food than they needed to survive.

9 Started Farming Then What? Culture: means way of life Culture area, regions in which groups of people have a similar way of life. Having shared beliefs Different cultures developed based on peoples environment.

Eastern Woodlands: Eastern U.S. Hunting, farming, wooden homes, gathered berries Algonquian Iroquois Southeast: Hot humid, farming and hunting Far North: Arctic Area, hunters, snow homes Northwest: Groups from Southern Alaska to Northern California, roamed fests, gathered, fished, permanent homes. Far West: Variety of climates Variety of homes, from pit homes, cone shaped houses, wooden houses Southwest: Desert like, farming, Built large Adobe, (sun dried brick) homes and apartments
