BUILDING an IB SURVEY COURSE Part Two – The Creation Mac McGuire Program Coordinator of International Business Forsyth Technical Community College Winston-Salem, North Carolina

The Game Plan Today, using the planning sheet handout, we will put our own individual vision of what we think an IB survey course should be into a plan. We’ll spend about 30-45 minutes writing out our plan and the remainder of the time sharing ideas from our plan with everyone. If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to speak out.

Before we begin… I have a few sample assignments that I’d like to quickly present to you (I doubt if they show up well on the handout).

SAMPLE DISCUSSION QUESTION MOD 1 DB INT 110 International Business © Copyright 2004 G.R. McGuire BACKGROUND: –Globalization produces many benefits, but it is not without cost. ISSUE FOR DISCUSSION: –What do we gain from globalization? What do we lose? What evidence do you offer (and from what source) to support your views?

SAMPLE WRITTEN HOMEWORK Mod 1 Written Homework INT 110 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS © Copyright 2004 G.R. McGuire On a single page showing your calculations, find the amount of additional exports the U.S. must sell to create enough jobs to reach an unemployment level of 3% (which would be the lowest level of unemployment since WWII). HINT: You will need to know that $1 billion in exports creates 11,500 jobs (text, page 11). You will need to find the current rate of unemployment (to nearest 1/10 of a percent). You will also need to know the actual number of jobs each 1/10 of a percent in the unemployment rate represents. The rest is up to you.

CONCLUSION Building an IB survey course really isn’t that much different from building other survey courses. Analyzing and planning are essential to the process. How you design it is entirely up to you. I hope this workshop has been worth your time. Thank you for coming. If I can be of help to anyone, please let me know.
