Grade 6: Unit 1 – Lesson 2

What Textures did we learn about? What part of history have we discussed? What was the chant called? There are several random materials in your table. With your partner, describe what the material feels like, and which texture would you think it was in music.

Baroque era (1600-1750) Here is an entire website that just happens to talk about Baroque music: http://www.baroquemusic.org/ Here is an entire website that just happens to talk about Baroque music: http://www.baroquemusic.org/ Baroque means imperfect pearl Baroque also means elaborate

Big players of the Baroque Era Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist of the Baroque Period. He enriched many established German styles through his skill in counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organization, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Many of Bach's works are still known today, such as the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B minor, the TheWell-Tempered Clavier, and his cantatas, chorales, partitas, passions, and organ works – and his music is revered for its intellectual depth, technical command, and artistic beauty. The Baroque era ended when Bach died.

George Handel (February 1685 – April 1759) was a German-born British Baroque composer, famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. Handel was born in 1685, in a family indifferent to music. He received critical musical training in Halle, Hamburg and Italy before settling in London (1712) and becoming a naturalized British subject in 1727. Within fifteen years, Handel, a dramatic genius, started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera, but the public came to hear the vocal bravura of the soloists rather than the music. In 1737 he had a physical breakdown, changed direction creatively and addressed the middle class. As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never performed an Italian opera again. Handel was only partly successful with his performances of English Oratorio on mythical and biblical themes, but when he arranged a performance of Messiah to benefit the Foundling Hospital (1750) the critique ended. Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, with works such as Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks and Messiah remaining popular. Handel composed more than forty operas in over thirty years, and since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and original instrumentation, interest in Handel's operas has grown. 9 Who won? WHY???? Who won? WHY????

New styles of music brings new instrument designs

Today, we create groups and identify and brainstorm within our groups……………Why?

What two composers did we talk about today? How were most Baroque instruments made? What does Baroque mean? What does Baroque mean?

Next class, we will review the design process and why it is a vital step to the engineering process of EVERYTHING you see around you. Also, begin to think how you will maintain a journal throughout the design process.
