1 LEARNING What is Every Child Matters? Every Child Matters (ECM) is a UK government initiative that was launched in 2003. It is one of the most important policy initiative and development programmes in relation to children and children's services of the last decade, and has been described as a "sea of change" to the children and families agenda.UKgovernment Every Child Matters covers children and young adults up to the age of 19, or 24 for those with disabilities. Its main aims are for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to: Be Healthy Stay Safe Enjoy and Achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well being

2 LEARNING Which of the 5 aims of ECM is most pertinent to MACLS and why? MACLS is prominently an Adult Based environment, however, there are classes at MACLS where child are present at classes and in the building. The 5 aims of the ECM is: Be Healthy Stay Safe Enjoy and Achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well being

3 LEARNING What types of abuse are there? The different types of Child Abuse (as mentioned in the NSPCC Child Protection Fact sheet): 1. Physical Abuse 2. Emotional Abuse 3. Sexual Abuse 4. Neglect 5. Bully – Although this currently does not register as a formal form of abuse

4 LEARNING What might be signs that abuse is taking place? Recognising signs of abuse is not easy, but the following information will help to alert you to the signs of possible abuse: 1. Physical Abuse – Cigarette burns, Broken Bones, Scalds with upward splash marks, bite marks unexplained bruises, marks or injuries. Changes of behaviour such as Fear of parents, flinching when approached or touched, reluctance to get undressed in hot weather, withdrawal, depression may also be present

Emotional Abuse – This is often difficult as there are no outward physical signs of this abuse, but changes in behaviour can indicate that it is taking place. These signs can be; Self Harm, Hair twisting, Rocking, Being unable to play Even developmental delay in terms of emotional progress.

Sexual Abuse – It is important to remember that it is not just men who sexually abuse children, it could be women or other children/young people. Signs of sexual abuse could be; Pain or itching in the genital area, STD’s, Stomach Pains, discharge or infection. Changes in behaivour are for example – being aggressive or withdrawn, nightmares, sexual knowledge beyond there area.

7 LEARNING What might be signs that abuse is taking place?... cont Neglect – Can be a difficult form of abuse to recognise, yet have some of the most lasting and damaging effects on children, signs for this could be; contact hunger, dirty/smelly, stealing food, loss of weight, inappropriate clothing. Changes in behaviour could indicate neglect are; having few or reduced freinds, being tired all the time, refusing medical attention.
