3 General Information The UNIVAC handled both numbers and alphabetic characters equally as well. The UNIVAC had Mercury delay lines were used to store the computer's program. In 1952 the UNIVAC predicted the outcome of the presidential election. The UNIVAC was used to calculate companies payrolls, sales record, analysis of sales

5 History The UNIVAC was first made on June 14 1951. From 1951 to 1958 they made 46 UNIVAC in total. In 1947, John Mauchly gave the name UNIVAC (universal automatic computer). Univac was made by, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly

6 Specification It was 25 feet by 50 feet in length, 5,600 tubes 18,000 crystal diods And 300 relays 2,25 MHz bit rate 1,000 words or 12,000 characters Mercury delay lines Magnetic tape Used for large amounts of output and input

7 Chronology 1951 The first UNIVAC I was delivered on June 14, 1951. 1952 It made its star-studded public debut in November 1952 on the CBS television network. 1953 3 UNIVACs were installed and in operation

8 1954 The first successful industrial payroll application by General Electric 8 UNIVAC were installed and in operation: –Bureau of the Census, Commerce Dept – Office of the Air Comptroller –Army Map Service –New York University (for Atomic Energy Commission) – University of Cal., Radiation Laboratory –David Taylor Model Basin, U.S.N. Bureau of Ships –Prudential Insurance Company –General Electric Company

9 1956 Westinghouse Electric Company installed a UNIVAC to calculate company payrolls, sales records, analysis of sales performance and other company business. 1958 A total of 46 UNIVAC I computers were delivered

12 UNIVAC in Modern Times UNIVAC started 50 years ago, and know it is recognized for being the only commercial computer. The UNIVAC really showed off in 1952 when it predicted Dwight Eisenhower's election over Adlai Stevenson
