1 WEEK FOUR COMPUTING DEVICES II ( 20 TH CENTURY TO DATE)

2 Computing devices II can be categorized as the 20 th century computing devices which are: ENIAC: ENIAC means Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer. Its was the first general purpose adaptable programmable digital computer developer by the J.R. Eckert and J.W Mauchly in 1946.ENIAC was not a stored program machine, it had to be reprogrammed for each task. BASIC COMPONENTS Its basic components include 18,000 vacuum tubes, circuitry memory module that stores and runs binary coded instructions. FEATURES OF ENIAC 1. It was built with 18,000 vacuum tubes. 2. It runs binary coded instruction 3. It has to be re-programmed always whenever, there is a need to handle a task different from its primary dedication. FEATURES OF ENIAC 1.0 It was built with 18,000 vacuum tubes 2.0 It runs binary coded Instructions 3.0 It has to be re-programmed always whenever there is a need to handle a task different from its primary dedication USES For military purposes, such as calculating ballistic firing tables and designing atomic weapons. EDVAC: EDVAC IS AN ACRONYM FOR Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer. EDVAC was constructed by John Von Neumann an early proprietor of stored program in a means to devise a computer that stores binary coded program. BASIC COMPONENTS Its components were 18,000 vacuum tubes, wiring circuits and mercury delay lines for storing programs or processes FEATURES OF EDVAC 1.0 EDVAC stores programs using mercury delay lines

3 2.0 It was programmable in handling general tasks 3.0 It has 10,000 vacuum tubes 4.0 It runs binary coded instruction USES It is used to solve problems in mathematics, meteorology, hydrodynamics and economics UNIVAC 1- This stands for Universal Automatic Computer designed by Eckert and Mauchly, an improved technology produced in 1949. It was the first commercial data processing machine BASIC COMPONENTS Its components include console typewriter and magnetic tape for input, the output is printed as file(s) on a magnetic tape FEATURES OF UNIVAC 1 1.0 It uses between 5,000 to 10,000 vacuum tubes 2.0 It uses typewriter console and magnetic tape for input and output 3.0 It uses mercury delay line for stored programs 4.0 It was the first commercial purpose data processing machine 5.0 it reads decimal coded Instruction USES It is used mainly as data processing calculator for commercial purpose PERSONAL COMPUTERS: These are portable computers, better known as micro computers. They are the smallest class of computer built With different integrated circuits, dedicated chipsets and IC-based microprocessor. They are very fast in operation and they belong to the Type of computer in use today. e.g., Desktop, Palmtop, Hand held, e.t.c.. FEATURES OF PCs Keyboard, touch pad, cache memory/ storage device, integrated circuit chips, CRT or LCD screen, high processing speed, very large Memory size, high level programming language, AC or DC powered.

4 BASIC COMPONENTS Electronic, Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit (VLSIC) MAIN USES General purpose electronic digital computer used at home, offices, schools, for calculation, database creation, analysis, weather Forecast, games playing, document creation, research purposes, book publishing, e.t.c. ASSIGNMENT List the features, basic components and uses of. Desktop. Laptop. Palmtop. Notebook
