Price: $1.00 per sheet “Holy, Holy God Almighty” “Jesus Messiah” “When I Think About the Lord” On December 6, I preached at Calvary Baptist Church in War, West Virginia. This Sunday was the day to receive their Lottie Moon Christmas offering. The pastor had been promoting this special day since October and I felt honored to be asked to preach a missions sermon to the church. We drove to West Virginia on Saturday and the further from Rome we traveled the deeper the snow became. When we arrived at Claypool Hill, VA to spend the night, the snow was about 4” deep. We went to Wal-Mart down the street to pick up a few things and to our surprise there was still plenty of bread and milk. The folks in Virginia don’t panic at 4” of snow. We made it to Calvary without any problems. There was a sense of excitement among the church members. The children’s choir sang and the rest of the service was no different than Sunday morning in most small Baptist churches. It came time to receive the Lottie Moon Offering and this is where things departed from the normal. This little church, with 33 in Sunday School, received $7,400 for international missions. It was amazing to see children bring change that they had saved for a year. It was heartbreaking to realize churches much larger in numbers and finances won’t come close to this amount. You see, Calvary is located in the poorest county in West Virginia. McDowell County is the 8 th poorest county in America. I pray this story inspires all of us to see what is really important this Christmas season. Merry Christmas! Jim
