Introduction Fine Art Digital Photography is a traditional art class where the tools are different: instead of canvas and paint, we use cameras, computers, software programs, and printers. Our emphasis is on approaching the world of photography as a means of artistic expression (as opposed to"photojournalism“, Instagram, or taking selfies or "snapshots") Students at all levels are able to succeed in Fine Art Digital Photography as long as you commit yourself to the art-making process.

Digital Photography is designed for students who are interested in fine art photography with digital tools. No prior knowledge of the particular software programs are required. Because of the project-based nature of the class, students at all levels will be able to learn at their own pace and create meaningful pieces to add to their portfolio.

ART Standards The Visual Arts Standards are infused in the Fine Art Digital Photography curriculum. We’ll start by learning to really see photography and studying the masters of photography. Trust me… you’re missing some good stuff!

Throughout the photographic projects that you complete you are constantly evaluating the artistic skill, both aesthetics and expression, of your own and other’s work and placing the work in a broader context. Throughout the course, you will be constantly evaluating your own work and your own progress.

Be on time and on task all class period. Behave and dress appropriately in the classroom and on location. When on location, be only where you are permitted. Bring your sketchbook to class EVERYDAY. No cell phones or electronic devices or headphones (Bell-to-Bell- NO CELL). No food or drink of any kind in the classroom. Rules and Expectations

Questions about Expectations? Can we text? Can we have our phones out? But I was just checking the time! I was fact checking on the internet! I wasn’t in class though! WHY? What if I need to finish my meal/bagel/burrito? How about Water? What if it’s in my bag? WHY? Where are we allowed to go? What’s behave appropriately mean? What about the last few minutes of class? WHY?

Student's who misbehave in anyway outside of the classroom, this includes being off task, will have their camera priveleges taken away for the remainder of the course. This policy is not taken lightly nor is it metered out without reason. It is my desire to spend my time teaching and not having to deal with discipline issues.

Attitude Students are expected to embrace the creative process, to learn from each other and share the studio. Please be prepared to come to class every day with an attitude of collaboration, tolerance and cooperation. Students are also expected to respect our precious (and expensive) equipment and resources. Student success in the course is based on mastery of new material, completion of assignments and projects. All students are expected to behave in a professional and ethical manner.

Materials Supplies for all Courses: 1) Sketchbook : approximately 8X10 inches, Unlined, 90 pages. (Can be purchased or we can make one here) 2) Current School ID card. 3) Flash (thumb) Drive of 1gb or better is highly recommended, but not required.

Camera use and lab time are privileges provided to all students. Students may use their own digital camera to complete assignments, but the camera must have MANUAL controls (focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and be able to record EXIF data). Students wishing to use their own cameras should review it with Mr. Younglund

We may work with visual materials such as famous works of art, artist documentaries, videos and online resources. This material may contain anatomical references, nude model poses and views of artists working from the nude in their studios. If you have questions or concerns about this material, please contact Mr. Younglund directly Figure and Film Studies

Grading 30% Practice Work Practice work includes daily response sketchbook, class work, homework, quizzes, tests and research assignments.

70% Presentation Work Presentation work consists of all the major projects that students complete which are presented to the class during critiques. Presentation work is graded based on a rubric for technical and artistic skill, meaning and originality, and student ability to evaluate work articulately.

Students seeking an "A" grade must complete all aspects of all assignments and turn them in on time, even the smallest oversight may threaten your mark. Excellence in Photography is often found in the details.

Late Work Completed projects and evaluations are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Late work will lose one grade (10%) per class day that a project is late. All due dates are posted online in the class calendar and announced in class. Re-grades Students may redo any on-time presentation work for a higher grade. A student will need to make an appointment with me for a re-grade conference; please bring the original grading sheet to that conference. All re-grades must be completed within ten school days of the posted grade.

Wait… What? If you have a bad photo for the assignment TURN IT IN! You can do a Re-grade! It’s that simple… the assignment is graded as if it was the original turn in. SWEET! If you turn it in late… you lose points AND the chance to do a Re-grade. BUMMER! Is there a catch? Re-grades need to be done outside of class time – We’re busy with our current assignment – and they are GRADED.. Not guaranteed better grade. Only one Regrade per assignment… as many assignments as you like. Any questions?

Attendance Prompt attendance to class is extremely important. Be seated in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings. There will be a second roll at the end of the period, in order to received credit you must be in your seat.

The CCA Unexcused Tardy Policy- 1st - teacher warning, 2nd - phone call home, 3rd–Saturday School, 4th – Referral to Admin. As I will begin immediately with an opening assignment for credit each day, it is imperative that you are in your assigned seat on time.

Students who are leaving during the school day for any reason are required to obtain the absence slip from the Attendance Office during non-class time.

Classroom Management Guidelines Cell Phone Policy- Cell phones, Ipods, headphones should be silent and invisible for the duration of the academic period. If these items are out during class time, they will be confiscated and turned in to Administration.

The CCA Dishonesty Policy will be enforced. Any unauthorized collaboration, plagiarism, forgery, theft, or other dishonest behavior will result in a zero grade, administrative referral, and parent contact.

Home Work Find Your teacher on the Web, locate the Spring calendar on the web, find the Class Expectations and Rules… Print out the last section and have it signed by Friday. Get or make a Sketchbook! Bring your School ID EVERYDAY.

Acceptable Use Policy Have a Clear Academic Reason for being on the Web, and teacher permission! Do not go around WEBSENSE Just because Websense didn’t block it, doesn’t mean you aren’t gonna get in trouble for viewing it! Absolutely anything you do on a school computer or server is viewable and NOT private. Your files are not always safe on the Share/Home. Do not stream Video or play any Games on the ‘net.

Acceptable Use Policy If you do not follow the AUP consequences: –Monetary fines for damages including teacher staff time –Criminal Charges –Suspension from School (3 times in the last year) –Expulsion from School (not yet) –Removal from Computer accounts and the Course. Three times students have been booted from computer classes that I’ve taught. I like students, but I like feeding myself too. The district’s rules and consequences will be inforced. You just received your second warning.

Cell Phone Assignment… Take photos with me of the same thing… but look for interesting angles, filling the frame, thinking about how it fills up the frame or your camera… AND eliminate all parts of the picture that you do not want in the image… MOVE CLOSE. Come back in quickly and we’ll take a look!
