WWF’s One in Five Challenge Jean Leston, Climate Change Team, WWF-UK 1 March 2011

WWF Mission The mission of WWF is… to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature

WWF is not anti-flying BUT… Aviation is a significant contributor to Climate Change Only 2% of global CO 2 now but could be 35% by 2050 Much higher % UK emissions: 7% today and could be 54% by 2050 (DfT) Multiplier effect at high altitude – approx double

Why reduce your flying? Rising oil prices = rising airfares!

Flying = 10-50%+ carbon footprint

Train vs plane ROUTEPLANETRAIN% DIFFERENCE London – Paris (Eurostar) 3.5 hrs, 244 kg/CO2 2.75 hrs, 22 kg/CO2 = 91% less Edinburgh - London 3.5 hrs, 193 kg/CO2 4.5 hrs, 24 kg/CO2 = 87% less Aberdeen - Southampton 468 kg/CO2101 kg/CO2= 78% less Edinburgh - Birmingham 244 kg/CO244 kg/CO2= 82% less Sources: Eurostar, AEF, www.seat61.com
