UNIVERSAL COLLEGE POLICIES n Students must meet certain residence requirements for a degree (even if you transfer into the college) n All students are subject to the Federal Privacy Act of 1974 (this insures your privacy, even from your parents) n Most institutions require placement tests. They are used to properly advise you into the correct English, Math, Foreign Language, Reading, and/or Vocabulary classes. n Most colleges adhere to a strict drop/add date. Always check your schedule of classes for this information n Most colleges have an attendance policy for classroom instruction n Almost every college has an Academic Dishonesty Policy

WHAT IF YOU EARN A FAILING GRADE? CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: n Did you attend class regularly? n Did you come to class prepared and ready for discussion? n Did you ask questions in class for clarification? n Did you meet with the professor during his/her office hours? n Did you seek outside assistance in places such as the writing center or math lab? n Did you ask your peers for assistance or join a peer study/focus group?

TIPS FOR ACCEPTING CRITICISM n Try to not take it personally n Stay composed n Ask for clarification if necessary n Listen before you respond n Be open-minded n Don’t make excuses n Take the advice and grow

GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WITH PROFESSORS n Get to know them outside the classroom n Come to class prepared n Ask and answer questions in class n Ask for help early n Don’t make excuses n Volunteer for opportunities to enhance learning n Never ask, “Are we doing /did we do anything important in class?” n Be respectful

TIPS FOR WORKING WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR n Locate your advisor as soon as possible n Develop a positive relationship n Prepare a list of questions prior to an appointment n Call advisor as needed n Be prepared by looking at the next semester’s schedule before an appointment
