2 What’s Happening Reading –The students are really enjoying our first novel! They did not want to put it down last week. We are continuing to learn about story elements this week to help us comprehend our first class novel! This week our focus is on summarizing and theme. However, we continue to revisit the story elements that we have learned if they are in a part of the book we are currently reading. Vocabulary–We are diving back into our Orange Vocabulary book for unit 2. Their worksheet over pages 20-23 is due on Friday. The test over comprehension of the words is on Friday. Writing/Grammar – The students will be finishing up their final drafts on Monday! They scored themselves off of a rubric we created together and then made changes to their story. I cannot wait to read all of their finished stories! We will then move our focus on to the trait of Ideas and having a narrowed topic that stays on topic. The students will begin a new writing piece based off of their narrowed topic! We will also be learning about nouns and pronouns. There will be a quiz over nouns and pronouns the beginning of the following week. ~Miss Flaherty Science –This week, the scientists will create a double bar graph to show the differences between the “Flying Squirrel’s” and the “Bald Eagle’s” flying distances. In addition, the students will review for Tuesday’s test! Beginning on Wednesday, We will begin learning about the make-up of the earth and how it is continuously changing. They will get a close-up view of how destructive earthquakes and volcanoes can be, and how quickly they can change the surface of our Earth. In a couple of weeks, the students will be able to create their own personal volcano and watch it erupt. How exciting! ~Mrs. Ortiz Math – 4th grade math: This week we will continue to organize and display data using several different types of graphs. We will create a bar graph and line plot of the information collected from homework last week. Median, mode, range, maximum, and minimum are words that relate to data and graphs. We are learning these terms and using them as we graph information. Also, the Acuity math test on the computer will be taken this week in the homeroom. 5th grade math: Divisibility rules? WOW! What an amazing math trick with numbers! We will also review factoring as we highlight prime and composite numbers. Acuity math tests will be taken this week on the computer in their homeroom. The 5th grade math students will be taking both 4th and 5th grade tests. The 5th grade test may feel a bit tough, but we talked as a class about just doing our best. As we continue to work with the 5th grade math standards, their confidence will grow. ~Mrs. Wentz Indiana History and Health – History: We are stepping back into the past this week. The students will enjoy the frigid time of glaciers and how their slow movement made Indiana what it is today. The students will also have a chance to showcase their creativity in a climate and wildlife poster this week. After we cruise through our first three lessons in unit one the students will have their first history assessment. The students should save and use their study guide booklets to help them narrow down the need to know information. If your historian misplaces their study guide booklet I have linked them to my webpage under important documents. –Historian Fritz Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns...or just to say, "Hello!" cflaherty@cps.k12.in.us or 663-8800 Ext. 14207~ Miss Flahertycflaherty@cps.k12.in.us
