11 Testing Comprehension Checks and Spelling tests on Fridays Reading comprehension quizzes iStation testing in Reading (Replaces DRA) iStation testing in Math CogAT in October Writing Assessments September, January and May End of unit tests in Math, Social Studies and Science Ongoing assessments in all subjects

12 Goal Setting This year students will be setting goals so they can “Begin with the End in Mind” Includes: Reading goals (monitor with iStation scores) Math goals (monitor with iStation scores) Other personal goals And more… I will work with your child to set goals that they can share with you Celebrate accomplishments Encourage and motivate your child to reach their goals

13 Homework Math homework – Monday-Thursday Read nightly 20+ minutes – Build stamina, fluency and comprehension Reading log – Summarize or tell a favorite part Spelling – Words from Words Their Way level Homework will be checked on Fridays. **Homework is not meant to be frustrating! If your child does not understand, just write a note and I can help the next day.

14 Digital Devices Students will use electronic devices (iPads, laptops) to enhance their learning and share what they’ve learned Learning will continue to focus on the content, not the technology Address “play on the iPad” Students will use technology to engage in learning tasks that are otherwise inconcievable Instruction provides opportunities for creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication

15 Digital Devices Each student is assigned an iPad and will use their Google account to download apps Students understand Acceptable use How to handle devices safely There are consequences for not using devices as intended/appropriately Safe internet practices

16 School Hours The first bell rings at 7:35 a.m. The school day begins at 7:40 a.m. with KTIM announcements and breakfast After 7:45, your child will need a tardy slip from the front office

17 Attendance It is very important to attend school each day so your child does not get behind. If you know your child is going to be absent, please call or send a note and I can try to give them their work ahead of time. If your child is ill, please send a note with an excuse to the office. Office note is required to return to classroom after a being absent Must be in school at 10:00, otherwise counted absent

18 Dress Code We follow the GCISD dress code. Some things to be aware of: For shirts, shoulder straps need to be 3 fingers wide (no spaghetti straps) For shirts, shoulder straps need to be 3 fingers wide (no spaghetti straps) Shorts need to fall below the finger tips. 19 Cafeteria Breakfast in the Classroom – Cafeteria account is charged. If the balance is empty, students are not allowed to eat breakfast Lunch is at 11:20 and ends at 11:50 Parents may join their child for lunch/eat at tables on stage.

20 Birthday Celebrations Celebrations take place in the classroom in the afternoon. Please give 24 hour or more notice so we plan time for the celebration Classroom birthday celebrations may not be served in the cafeteria where meals from the Nutrition Services Department are being served and consumed. Birthday celebrations must take place in the classroom or in the cafeteria after all meals have been served.

22 Field Trips Considering… Dallas Arboretum Dallas Zoo Keep and eye out in the 2 nd grade newsletter so you will know when they are coming up!

23 To chaperone at field trips and other class events, you must: Complete the online background check and Attend the volunteer training - tonight at 7 p.m. - tonight at 7 p.m. -Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.

24 Parent Support Please check and sign Green folders each day! Please be a motivator for your child to succeed in school. Please ask questions if you are not sure about something! Please remember that your child needs to be more responsible with your support. Please help make sure homework is completed and neat. Please communicate any concerns or ideas with me. (not enough challenge, too much challenge, just right…)
