2 Stratford Beginnings William Shakespeare was born and grew up in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK He attended King’s New School in his hometown He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 Had a daughter named Susanna Twins named Judith (daughter) and Hamnet (son) Hamnet died at age 11 of unknown causes ~Not much is known about Shakespeare’s early life as a child

3 Success in London Shakespeare becomes the well- known famous play writer and actor in London, England Narrative Poetry Publishes poetry in 1593 Ex: “The Rape of Lucrece” Theatrical Career 1594: Theaters reopen; Shakespeare becomes the leader of the Lord Chamberlain's Men “In the 1590’s, he wrote his plays on English history as well as several comedies and at least 2 tragedies” Ex: Tragedy- “Romeo and Juliet” [London, England]

4 Success in London (Cont.) The Globe Years 1599: Shakespeare’s company builds a theater across the south bank of River Thames and names it The Globe Plays like Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth were introduced in this theater The Globe hosted plays from 1599-1608 when it is ignited and burns to the ground 1608-1612: Plays are performed at the company’s new indoor Blackfriars’s Theater Shakespeare wrote very little after 1612, but publishes King Henry VII

5 The Final Years Between 1610 and 1613, he returned to Stratford-upon-Avon Returned to a large property, with his wife and daughters and their husbands Made money from his acting career and acting company profits Made him a very wealthy man “It is also assumed that William Shakespeare's growing wealth and reputation played some part in inclining the crown, in 1596, to grant John Shakespeare, William's father, the coat of arms that he had so long sought”

6 The Final Years (Cont.) Died in Stratford, April 23, 1616 Seven years after he died, his work was published (Mr.William Shakespeare Comedies, histories and Tragedies) [Statue of Shakespeare in Stratford]

7 An Expansive Age Shakespeare used Greek and Roman classics to aid in his writing The ghost in Hamlet is a figure from a Roman tragedy North and South America were explored, and they worshiped differently than Renaissance Europeans and Englishmen London expanded and changed since Shakespeare lived there London was troubled and also was a home for the wealthy

8 An Expansive Age (Cont.) Stratford-Upon-Avon referred to a nearby forest of Arden –small town of gossip and sheep herding Part of Shakespeare’s work was influence by his hometown and helped it to become famous [Forest of Arden]

9 Shakespeare’s Story “Became a wealthy theater man and landowner” Reportedly, he was not a strong reader but had other talents William Shakespeare sometimes helped his father butcher meat Queen Elizabeth demanded a play from Shakespeare about Falstaff in love A very different, odd, yet intelligent man Said to have died of a fever from drinking too much
