1 Connecticut Technical High School System Exploratory Safety Program Safety Goals The Exploratory Safety Program will create an awareness of the need for following general trade/technology safety procedures.

2 Program Goals - As a result of education in the Exploratory General Safety program in grade 9 students will: GOAL I: Safe work habits must be practiced in order to become habits. GOAL 1A: Following emergency protocol as it pertains to lockout, lock down and fire drills. GOAL IB: Proper storage and cleanup of Flammables, Chemicals, and hazardous materials and the use of MSDS sheets. GOAL II – Student Safety/Code of Conduct GOAL III: Know proper medical procedures to follow for student and staff safety including exposure control precautions to be taken in the event of an injury that occurs on school grounds or at a production job-site. GOAL IV - Student Introduction to General Policy and Procedures for Exploratory Technology

4 Safe work habits must be practiced in order to become habits. Why is it important not to touch any equipment until you have been instructed to do so? Why is it important to inspect equipment you are about to use? Why do we lock out defective equipment?

5 Wait for instruction prior to using any tools / equipment. Tools Equipment Electrical Appliances

6 Explain the importance of inspecting tools and equipment prior to use. Inspect Report Repair Explain what lockout/tag out refers to.

7 Why is it important to understand and follow emergency protocol? Lock down Lock out Fire Drills-Stop work, be Silent, Follow instructions Emergency shutoff

8 Why is it important to know where the location of the fire protection equipment is? Fire extinguisher Fire Blanket

9 Why is it important to understand and apply specific knowledge when handling different substances? Locate fire/flammable storage cabinet.

10 Why is it important to understand where to find information on MSDS sheets? MSDS = Material Safety Data Sheet Locate MSDS book Why is it important to know what the “yellow book” is?

11 Why is it important to know how to clean up certain spills? To prevent injury from dangerous chemicals.

12 Why is it important to read and understand labels? To Identify chemicals that are questionable in nature. Labels help us to identify dangerous chemicals.

13 Why is it important to follow safety procedures? Safety glasses are needed for all shops and should be worn as instructed Safety shoes should be worn at all times in shop Hand tools can create a safety hazard. No jewelry allowed Long hair must be tied back No horseplay

14 Why is professional conduct important? Serious Offenses… Theft - Personal, School, and Projects Contraband Weapons Destruction of Property - School, and Personal.

15 Why is professional conduct important? Shop Uniform Policy… Shirt tucked in Pants worn at waist No loose clothing Safety shoes at all times ID’ s visible

16 Why is professional conduct important? Interpersonal Skills… Act professionally at all times Consider the person next to you Respect shop and others

17 Why is professional conduct important? Shop Rules….. No cell phones Backpacks and jackets placed in designated area Student responsibility concerning locks Locker area No food allowed No electronic devices

19 Why is it important to report an injury or medical emergency? Inform Instructor of Incident Nurse Phone # Posted. Know the location of the nurse’s office. Report medical problems, illness, injuries, medications being taken, allergies (food, bee sting, latex or other allergies) to the school nurse What are the procedures to report an accident?

22 Blood Borne Pathogens Notify Instructor of all injuries Do not offer first aid. Get help! Know location of standard precaution or first aid kit so that you can retrieve them if asked by an instructor Apply direct continuous pressure if you are injured and bleeding.

23 Blood Borne Pathogens Tell instructor about blood or other contamination in trade area Avoid contaminated areas and equipment

24 Blood Borne Pathogens Keep wounds covered until healed If you come in contact with someone else’s blood: Wash skin immediately with soap and water Flush other areas (like eyes or mouth) with water immediately

25 Under what conditions are safe work practices necessary? Stay in Assigned Work Areas. Sign In. Sign Out. Staying at assigned work station/area. Instructor knows student’s location at all times.

26 Housekeeping Follow Individual Shop Cleanup Policy (tools and materials returned) Keep individual work stations clean and orderly Notify the instructor of any spills or broken tools and equipment regardless of type.

27 Working Conditions Mop Floors (no puddles) Squeegee when available Use caution with cords and power tools Use caution with dust/sawdust etc. floors may be slippery

28 Students will only consume food products in the cafeteria. Food may become contaminated with chemicals that are commonly found in the shop area

29 Due to safety and security policies doors and windows must be kept closed unless instructed to do so. Student will obtain instructor permission to open any door or window in the shop area.
