2 The Lands of the Region East Asia includes China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan Australia is an island, country and continent with New Zealand it’s neighbor The pacific Islands are grouped into three subregions- Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia

3 China China’s Mountains  The Himalayas run along China’s southwestern border, separating China from Nepal  The highest peak of the Himalayas is Mt. Everest  The Plateau of Tibet is the highest plateau in the world  Known as the “Roof of the World”

4 China China’s Great Rivers  The Xi Jiang is China’s southernmost river  The Chang Jiang is China’s longest river  The Huang He is China’s northernmost river  It begins in the Plateau of Tibet

5 China China’s Deserts  The Taklimakan covers the northwestern China  The Gobi desert is located in central northern China  Means waterless place

6 Japan Japan’s four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu Japan is located on top of two tectonic plats that often sink below a third plate making Japan more likely to have volcanic eruptions and earthquakes

7 Japan Mountains and Volcanoes  Japan’s tallest mountain is Mount Fuji  Japan is part of the Ring of Fire  The Ring of Fire is an area of volcanic activity along the borders of the Pacific Ocean  Climate  Japan’s climate is largely controlled by monsoons  During the summer and early fall, storms called Typhoons occur Typhoon is a hurricane that occurs in the western Pacific

8 Australia Australia’s landscape is unique because it has not changed dramatically for more than 250 million years  The Outback is a huge stretch of interior land in Australia  The Great Barrier Reef is made of more than 2,500 individual reefs and islands
