19
Is your clothing appropriate?
20
The business environment has developed a more casual attitude regarding proper attire in the workplace. Employees are often confused about proper work attire.
21
To determine appropriate dress for work: Ask your supervisor.Ask your supervisor. Ask the human resources manager.Ask the human resources manager. Consult the company’s policy manual.Consult the company’s policy manual. Observe what coworkers in similar positions wear to work.Observe what coworkers in similar positions wear to work. Some image consultants advise you dress a step above everyone else, even on casual days.
22
Ask yourself: “Would I feel embarrassed about what I’m wearing if I had to meet with the company CEO?” “Would I feel embarrassed about what I’m wearing if I had to meet with the company CEO?”

When you don’t have the money for expensive clothing, you need to allocate money for various wardrobes (e.g., casual, work). When you don’t have the money for expensive clothing, you need to allocate money for various wardrobes (e.g., casual, work). Select a few, well-made, individual pieces that go with a variety of other items to create new outfits. Purchase less expensive, generic items to complete your wardrobe.
24
Today’s fads and extremes may appeal to you, but they are not always appropriate for the work environment. Many employers view unusual hairstyles and colors, visible body piercings, and tattoos in a negative manner. You are representing your employer, and your employer pays your salary. You may need to “tone down” your appearance to get and keep your job.
25
Companies often have important reasons for instituting dress codes. If working around heavy, dangerous equipment, an employer might require that you remove jewelry or wear specific clothing to protect you from injury.
26
Objective C Demonstrate procedures for maintaining an appropriate personal appearance.
27
You affect your appearance through your actions and by your choices. You define your brand. As your brand evolves, you’ll want to make adjustments to reflect the best you.
28
Steps to make the most of your personal brand: Develop a hygiene routine by: Showering or bathing Washing and styling hair Using deodorant or antiperspirant Washing face Brushing and flossing teeth Making sure nails are clean and trimmed Shaving facial hair or legs
29
Steps to make the most of your personal brand: Assess the situation and select the appropriate outfit and accessories. Conservative, professional outfits are worn to job interviews and funerals. Formal attire (e.g., gowns, tuxedos) is worn to weddings and dances. Athletic or sportswear is worn to the gym or while bike riding. Casual apparel is worn to hang out with friends or go to the movies. You will probably wear something different to work than you would to other events (e.g., sporting events). The situation will dictate how you will present yourself to others.
30
Take care when selecting the appropriate accessories for the outfit. Jewelry Example: A female might choose small, stud earrings to wear to work and select large, fun, hoop earrings to wear when going out with friends. Shoes Example: A bank manager might attract attention if he came to work wearing a conservative suit and neon-colored running shoes. Makeup should enhance your appearance, not detract from it; don’t overdo. Example: Select colors that match your skin tone and highlight your best facial features.
31
To make the most of your personal appearance, select clothing that emphasizes positive physical attributes while camouflaging the not-so-positive ones. To appear taller and thinner Straight silhouettes Vertical lines Smooth fabric textures; small prints/plaids Monochromatic, dark, or cool color schemes Shape with seams or darts Small belt To appear shorter and wider Wide silhouettes Horizontal lines Bulky, heavy fabric textures; bold prints/plaids Bright, light, warm colors; contrasting colors Shape with gathers or pleats Wide belt To de-emphasize attention to features Dark, dull colors Minimal structural design Minimize decoration Flat textures/soft, plain fabrics To highlight attention to features Light/bright colors Structural or decoration accents Larger prints; shiny textures
32
Evaluate the status of your clothes and accessories. Make sure clothing is clean and free of stains, odors, rips, and tears. Clean and repair clothing before wearing. Make sure that clothing is wrinkle-free and iron if necessary. Verify that shoes are clean and scuff-free. Determine whether undergarments are needed and make sure hosiery does not have any visible runs or holes.
33
Conduct a final check. Before you go out, take one final look in the mirror to make sure everything is in place. Start from the top and move down. Is your hair neat and styled? Is your makeup (if you wear it) appropriate and smudge free? Do you see spinach between your teeth? Does your clothing hang properly? Are your undergarments showing? Are your accessories appropriate for the occasion?
34
Establish a backup plan. Accidents happen. Spills Rips Select and prepare a backup outfit in the event of a clothing emergency.
35

36
Does Thin Win? To project a positive image, many companies publish materials that contain specific types of people. These photos often feature a very narrow aspect of the workforce by showing people who are: –Young –Slender –Free from handicaps This depiction affects many people’s view about an appropriate personal appearance.
37
Discussion Questions 1.Do companies have a responsibility to present a more realistic picture of people used in print materials? 2.Are organizations responsible for the increase of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia because of the images of thinness they present? 3.Would pictures of heavy individuals affect your attitude towards the organization or your decision to purchase or use their products?
