4 List the reasons why: What words do you not know that you find on the page? Why was putting a colony in Virginia important for England?

6 Some men in London wanted to send settlers to Virginia, but none of them was rich enough to start a colony by himself. So all of them put their money together and owned a little part of the company. This little part of a company is called a “share” or “stock.” Virginia Company’s “official” seal from the King (after they got their charter)

8 The Virginia Company of London wanted to send men to Virginia to find gold and make money for their company. If they could make money from their colony in Virginia, their company would become wealthy!!

10 England wanted to establish an American colony to increase its wealth and power. They hoped to find silver and gold. A colony in America could furnish raw materials that could not be grown or obtained in England. A colony in America would open new markets for trade. Why would King James say “Yes”!?

Work with a partner to list at least 3 ideas in each part of the graphic organizer. What do you notice? What do you know? What reasons are given to go? Is the ad successful in convincing? Why or why not? What questions do you have?

30 Each student will design an advertisement poster, entreating volunteers to sign up for the voyage to Virginia for the purpose of finding riches and establishing a permanent settlement. Posters must be include the three reasons for colonization, be colorful, include at least 4 other facts, and be persuasive.

38 The stockholders hoped to make a lot of money for themselves and England—that’s the economic part. A venture is a business that is risky or dangerous. The stockholders found 104 men willing to go on this trip.
