2 Getting Started-Step 1 0 Talk with parents, friends, or teachers and brainstorm ideas 0 Brainstorming worksheet used in Jr. English 0 Decide on a topic based on your interests and/or abilities 0 Make sure there is a learning STRETCH 0 Determine how a project could be formed from your interests 0 Organizing an event, learning a skill, giving a performance, constructing an item, etc. 0 Write an detailed description of what you think your project involves (write paragraph on proposal form) 0 Check which of the four categories your idea falls into (academic, community service, career, personal growth) 0 Can be a combination of these categories

3 Getting Started—Step 2 0 Determine the potential things needed to complete the project 0 People involved 0 Will it take more people than just you and your mentor? 0 Resources needed 0 Equipment, materials, gas, etc. 0 What are the estimated costs involved? 0 Time 0 Estimate how many hours you think the project will take to complete 0 Research paper topic 0 Determine what research can be done to show a relationship of the paper to the project (this is not a journal of project—it is research)

4 Getting Started—Step 3 0 Determine who in the community might have the expertise and skills needed to assist you in completing your project 0 Consider the following: 0 Does he/she have 2 years of experience in the field, is 21 years old, and not a USD 323 employee or relative (blood, step- or marriage) ? 0 Will he/she be available to judge your presentation? 0 Consider travel distance if not a local person 0 Makes face-to-face meetings and getting required signatures more challenging 0 Proposed Project Outline 0 Detailed, step-by-step process in a logical order needed to complete the project 0 Steps to complete just the project not the required paperwork 0 If it takes more than 12 steps add another page

5 Getting Started—Step 4 0 Contact prospective mentor 0 Initial contact made by phone or face-to-face to set up an appointment to do the necessary interview and paperwork 0 You may be turned down—accept it and move on to the next viable option 0 Drop off the brochure ahead of time so the mentor can read it (also on our Exit Project web page on the RCHS website) 0 Interview 0 Follow procedures given in the Interview Training Seminar 0 Training will be done during advisor period 0 Record interview using a digital device (cell phone, recorder) 0 Check out device from Augustine-Stegman 0 Discuss in detail how the project will work and how the mentor may be needed to help you 0 Discuss lessons/training, demonstration, advice, approval, etc. 0 Additional steps or changes in steps on the rough draft should be discussed

6 Getting Started—Step 5 0 Does he/she agree to mentor you and what are the terms? 0 What will the mentor be responsible for? 0 Lessons/training, demonstration, advice, approval, etc. 0 Get ALL NECESSARY contact information (see form) 0 Get mentor signature in blue ink 0 Get parental signature in blue ink 0 Student signature in blue ink 0 Student e-mail and phone contact number 0 Transcribe interview 0 Type interview and print 0 Save audio/video recording to Exit Folder 0 Submit to Augustine-Stegman

7 Getting Started—Step 6 0 Turn in Proposal/Mentor Confirmation Form properly filled out 0 Attach interview transcription & submit digital interview file 0 Submit to your assigned senior advisor by deadline date 0 Failure to submit by deadline results in an additional 5 hours being added to the project

8 Proposal Approval 0 The Exit Committee will review all proposals and either 0 Approve as written 0 Approve with revisions/suggestions 0 Deny approval and schedule a meeting with you to discuss the reasons the project was not viable 0 Upon approval the proposal form will be returned to you to make revisions 0 Retrieve Exit Proposal Form from I: drive Class of 2016 Exit folder 0 TYPE your proposal in final copy format 0 Save as Your Name Proposal in your Exit Project folder 0 Do final copy edits of interview transcription and turn in with revised proposal form 0 Submit all proposal forms by deadline date

9 Take Off!!! 0 Once the project proposal has been approved and a final copy has been submitted, you are free to begin working on the project. 0 If you make appointments with mentor KEEP THEM!! 0 It reflects badly on you and RCHS to not be responsible 0 Any changes to the proposal steps must be approved by the Exit Committee. If you encounter problems with your project, please contact your senior advisor and discuss your options.
