Communication Skills One of the most important requirements for those who organize and manage events is having the ability to clearly inform, train, and lead the people who work for them Most successful leaders have strong writing and verbal skills Be clear, concise, and informative

Gaining Experience Events present many volunteer opportunities –“Learn something by doing something” –Discover what you do and don’t like, what you excel at doing, and how to stand out from the pack Attend a higher education institution with a well-respected sports management program –Over 300 colleges and universities in the United States alone offer degrees in sports management or administration –Offers an impressive credential to add to your resume, a depth of knowledge based on academic achievement, and a set of peer and industry contacts

Internships Practical training supervised by an executive or mentor for students and young job seekers –Paid or unpaid –Academic credit –Limited hours –Can lead to a full-time position Internships with smaller professional and amateur sports organizations can provide just as much experience as one with a major entity –Opportunity to do more, wear many hats

Internships Important questions to ask when searching for an internship include: –In what department of the organization is the internship? –What responsibilities are assigned to the intern? –To whom does the internship report, and what opportunities will there be to meet other executives? –Will this internship provide relevant experience, skill building, and learning for career development?
