4 Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation. It is situated in the center of the European part of Russia, on the banks of the Moskva River. Moscow is one of the world biggest megapolises. Its population is over 10 million people. Moscow was founded by Yury Dolgoruky in 1147.

5 Climate in Moscow. Moscow is located in the middle of the continent, so the temperature is continental. The hottest months are July and August. The first snow usually appears in the middle of November, but the most snowy months are January and February. February is also the coldest month, when the temperature often goes down to 15 degrees below.

6 Sightseeings. For hundreds of years Moscow has been the center of the Russian national culture. The city possesses the most valuable historical and architectural monuments of world importance: the Kremlin, Novodevichy (New Maiden) Convent, Church of Pokrov in Fili, Moscow State University, Triumphal Arch, Memorial complex of Victory on Poklonnaya Gora.

7 The Kremlin. It was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yury Dolgoruky and now it is a mass of crenellated ramparts, glittering onion domes and majestic turrets. Now it is the spiritual, political and historical heart of Moscow.

8 The Bolshoi Theater is a world famous ballet theater, founded in the late 18th century and producer of some of Russia's most famous stage performers, including Rudolf Nuryev.

9 The Tretyakov Gallery is home of the world's most extensive collection of Russian art, including everything from icons by the legendary Andrey Rublyov to portraits of some of Russia's most prominent 18th and 19th century public figures.

10 The Arbat is Moscow's liveliest pedestrian street and offers a great choice of street cafes,

12 restaurants, bars, clubs

14 and street entertainers.

15 Moscow State University housed in one of the city's seven enormous gothic skyscrapers commissioned by Stalin in the 1950s, the university is the great seat of learning of some of Russia's most famous scholars and political figures.

16 Lenin's Mausoleum - still the resting place of the embalmed body of the founder of Soviet Communism some 76 years after his death, housed in a futuristic granite-cube building designed by Shchusev that stands on Red Square next to the Kremlin walls.

17 St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most Russian of all outstanding monuments of architecture. It was built in 1555-1560 by the architects Barma and Postnik to commemorate the victories in the battles for Kazan and Astrakhan

18 The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (khram Khrista Spasitela) in Moscow may be the largest Orthodox church in the world. The building is magnificent, but not as old as it looks: it was rebuilt in 2000 after the original was demolished by Stalin.

19 Triumphal Arch is Moscow’s main tourist attraction.

21 St.Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. St.Petersburg is one of the biggest cultural and scientific centres in the world, the city with very rich history, traditions and promising future. The world-known architects, sculptors and artists were invited there to create the city's unique look.

22 The broad wonderful squares, wide avenues, including the main street - Nevsky Avenue, the rich palaces of Russian aristocrats, the majestic cathedrals and administrative buildings sprang up there. There are about 120 museums, 40 theatres, 50 universities, 400 scientific research organizations. St.Petersburg is situated in the eastern part of the Finnish Bay on 42 islands in the mouth of the Neva River.

23 The Population of St.Petersburg is about 5 million people. This is the second largest city in Russia (after Moscow) and the 19th in the world. St.Petersburg is a big sea port.

24 Alexander Column Creator of the marvelous St. Isaac's Cathedral came this monument to the Russian military victory in the war with Napoleon's France. Named after Emperor Alexander I, who ruled Russia between 1801 and 1825 (during the Napoleonic Wars), the column is a terrific piece of architecture and engineering.

26 The monument to Peter the Great, the founder of this splendid city.

27 The city is called Northern Venice because there are 65 rivers and canals there with artistically decorated bridges.

28 The Russian Museum contains the richest collection of pictures.

29 Kazan Cathedral is the cathedral of the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg. The church is dedicated to the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan, the most venerated icon in Russia, a holy icon of the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patron of the city of Kazan.

30 Novosibirsk is the third- largest city in Russia, has the biggest railway station along the trans-Siberian route, the biggest library in Siberia, and the biggest opera/ballet theater in all of Russia -- even bigger than Moscow's Bolshoy. The red-brick Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, while not the biggest, is considered one of the finest existing examples of pure Russian Orthodox architecture.

38 Novgorod. This city is one of the oldest in country. Novgorod is a city- museum it has a unique collection of the ancient Russian icons, birchbark scrolls.

39 It is a city of Orthodox churches, surrounded by the old monasteries. Over 40 churches have survived in good state, a part of the earthern ramparts has been preserved, there is a museum of Wooden Architecture. The unique monuments of Novgorod architecture are included into the list of the world heritage of UNESCO. Among them are the Novgorod Kremlin, St.Sophia cathedral - the oldest on the territory of Rus, the churches of the Savior at Nereditsa and the Savior at Kovalyovo.

44 Samara is the city of Art. There are 6 theatres (among them 2 academic ones), a philarmony, a symphony orchestra, a circus, 7 museums and other places of culture in our city. Guests, coming to Samara, praise it for beautiful geografical position. It is seen in the close position of the Volga and the Samara rivers and the Zhiguli Mountains are called "Switzerland on the Volga" for their wonderful beauty.
