Energy grows with h2o’s

The Meaning  Definition- Energy that you use by reacting hydrogen with oxygen.  Found in organic compounds Gasoline Natural Gas Methanol Propane

Where It’s Used  Different hydrogen fuel stations: NASA - uses to propel rockets in orbit California has 10 active “demonstration stations” Other Stations In…: ○ Germany ○ Japan ○ Korea ○ Denmark ○ United Kingdom

Benefits of This Resource  1. Always available  2. No Harmful Emission  3. Environment Friendly: Non-toxic.  4. Renewable: break up molecules and done!  5. Fuel Efficient: produces more energy per pound of fuel

Consequences  1. Expensive: requires lots of work to free from other elements  2. Storage: moving around  3. Highly Flammable  4. Fossil Fuel Dependency: still need other non-renewable sources.  5. Replacing Gasoline: cars would change.

Resource Uses  Fuel cells  Batteries  Cars  NASA (propel space shuttle)  Fork lifts (used Walmart, Whole Foods, etc)

Costs:

 The target goal is to get the costs to $30/KW So more people can afford it  In 2002, it was $275/KW and now it is $47/KW

The Acts  1. Federal Power Act: have a license and a good reason to do this  2. National Environment Policy Act: Realize environmental consequences  3. Clean Water Act: It applies with the standards  4. Rivers and Harbors Act: Authorization must be secured for the construction of any navigable water of the US  5. Central Zone Management: be sure the project will be with the Costal Management Program

Extra Facts  Hydrogen- one of the most abundant elements known in the universe  14 times lighter than air  Non-toxic & non-polluting  Made from many sources (wind, solar, etc)  10-11 million metric tons of hydrogen produced in the US per year: Enough to power…. 20-30 million cars 5-8 million homes
