Student Health Association Conference Exeter 2015 Student Data Mining The University of the West of England

Introduction The Old School Surgery Bristol & The University of the West of England Health Centre Presented by Dr Katrina Boutin (Managing Partner) Julie Kirby (Practice Manager)

Background  The Practice has been providing health care for the University of the West Of England's students since 2009 – partly as a branch surgery on the main campus site.  We offer appointments with Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and HCA’s providing a full range of General Medical Services.  We cater for students at both sites and look after approximately 7,000 students of our 16,000 patient population.  Before year end 13/14 only limited data concerning students had ever been mined

Why & How  Recognition of the specialist and unique nature of student health  Keen to explore the different presentations patients in this cohort attended the surgery with.  To enable us to best utilise our skill mix at the University surgery. To provide an efficient multi disciplinary team.  Using IT and medical expertise in house we devised the appropriate searches and produced the results, which we’ll present shortly.

Workshop Groups  In your table groups put together your top 5 group problem headings. ……………………………………………………  Then within the group heading your most common presentation …………………………………………………..  For example Group Heading – Infections / Most common presentation – Glandular Fever

Conclusions  I’m sure many of you will agree there are no surprises in the data.  We expected mental health and Sexual health to be our dominant problems presented  Using the data produced we have been able to plan our appointments that we offer more effectively and flex our skill mix to match the need accordingly.

Future Plans  In order to address the shortage in the NHS of GP’s we are using the results to develop further the multi-disciplinary team model in order to become a multi disciplinary community provider.  Develop our nursing team in provision of sexual health services  Consider employing a specialised mental health nurse.  Develop the role of our clinical pharmacist.  Develop the role of an in house physiotherapist.  Compare this data with the data of our non student patients (to provide better information of skill mix at the surgery)

Thoughts and questions  Happy to take any questions??
