Module Two

Purpose Simulation type activity of how to conduct a Student Session Provide information on the events of the day Agenda Student Mission Possible session Communicating with your fellow Spy

Student Mission Possible Session After your group has completed their cheer the Spies will than proceed to their assigned Student Session. Conduct the session according to your checklist – Begin with an ice-breaker( outside if possible). – Award prize ballots to the winning team in your session and to any strong participants

Student Mission Possible Session Here are some icebreakers to try with your group : Hi my name is!” This is a memory icebreaker Have the students form a circle. Select a student to start the game The student would say for example “Hi my name is Alex and I like apples” Then it is the person next to Alex’s turn. They must repeat what Alex said, and say something about themselves. For example, “His name is Alex and he likes apples, my name is Merisa and I like mermaids”

Student Mission Possible Session House is on Fire! Ask the students, "Your house is on fire, and everyone is safe You have thirty seconds to run through the house and collect three articles you want to save What would you grab? And why?" Have the students take turns telling the group what three items they would save

Student Mission Possible Session The Human Knot Have each group standing, facing towards each other, in a circle First, instruct everyone to lift their left hand and reach across to take the hand of someone standing across the circle Next, have everyone lift their right and reach across to take the hand of another person standing across the circle Ask students to introduced themselves to other students they are holding hands with as they grab their hand Make sure that no one is holding hands with someone standing directly beside them Without letting go of hands, the students will untangle themselves into a circle

Student Mission Possible Session Beach Ball Each student takes turns passing the beach ball around When a student catches it, they must answer the question their right thumb lands on.

Student Mission Possible Session I am going to the University of Windsor and I am going to bring… Have students form a circle. The group leaders decide on a word pattern. For example, if the leader chooses to accept only words with double letters they could start off the game by saying “I am going to the University of Windsor and I am going to bring a toothbrush” The students then take turns sharing what they are going to bring If a student mentions a word that does not have double letters the leaders say “I am sorry but you cannot bring that to university” Hopefully the students will eventually catch on and discover the pattern

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ICE BREAKER?

Student Mission Possible Session Recommendations before you start! Introduce yourselves! (Name, Program etc.) Make sure to encourage students to write questions down during the presentation. There will be a chance to ask them at the end. – Often times the questions they need answered will be addressed on a later slide This allows you to maintain control of the time factor and will allow more discussion at the end

Student Mission Possible Session During the presentation Try not to read off the power point screen This makes you appear unprepared To avoid this, read the slides before hand Remember to divide the slides up before you begin Talk to your group members and decide how the presentation will run (you will have time for this when you meet in the morning, but make sure you remember and follow it!) Do not talk over your group members. You need to be a united front and show respect for one another Some things you can do to spice up your presentation are: Insert personal experience when talking about a slide Students often relate more to your experiences Be passionate about what you are talking about If you are excited that will ripple down and make them excited

Communicating With Your Fellow Spy Effective Body Language WHILE PRESENTING BE AWARE OF YOUR: Eye contact Facial expressions Gestures Posture & body orientation – Pay attention to the message you send with your body language Proximity – Remember to move around, spread out in front of the room – Don’t stay standing behind the podium – spreading out encourages interaction Vary your voice Word Fillers (um….,Like)

Communicating With Your Fellow Spy Student asks a Question during the Presentation If the question is about the topic – Keep your answer clear and concise If the question is off topic – “Great question” we will be speaking about this later on in the presentation (if you know it is) or – “Great question” we will come back to it later on so your question can be better answered Now that you have finished the power point it is time to invite questions – After inviting questions, don’t rush ahead if no one asks a question Allow the students to gather their thoughts – When answering the question direct your remarks to the entire group

Communicating With Your Fellow Spy When Answering Questions Keep focused – Don’t loose track and continue to go off on a tangent Keep responses 10-40 seconds, too short may appear abrupt, longer answers appear too elaborate You may receive off the wall questions, don’t let them sidetrack you. Answer them to the best of your ability – Do not make the student feel stupid – If you don’t know ask another Orientation Leader

Communicating With Your Fellow Spy If asked a question about residence or the meal plan explain that there will be a Residence and Meal Plan Presentation in the afternoon that will address all their questions and concerns After Presenting Make sure to have them fill out the evaluation for the student session at the back of their handbook Have students fill out Alumni forms and hand them back into you Explain what will be happening the rest of the day Direct them to their Advising Locations

WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY IF YOU ARE ASKED A QUESTION ABOUT THE MEAL PLAN?

Quiz MINIMIZE this screen to complete quiz for Module 1. Your answers will be submitted to Danielle Handsor
