2 Taxing Tea The Townshend Acts were repealed, except the tax on tea. In 1773, Parliament Passed the Tea Act – Gave British East India Company a monopoly over the tea trade – British tea was cheaper than the smuggled Dutch tea

4 The Intolerable Acts Lord North was stunned by the news of the Boston Tea Party. King George agreed. “We must master them totally,” he declared, “or leave them to themselves and treat them as aliens.” Parliament to pass a new series of laws in 1774. – Designed to punish Massachusetts and serve as a warning to the other colonies. Coercive Acts, – British called these acts the Coercive Acts, but they were so harsh that the colonists Intolerable Acts. called them the Intolerable Acts.

5 Reactions The colonies unite – Other colonies offered Massachusetts support – Committees of correspondence called for a meeting of all the colonies.
