3. How is 3rd grade different? Increased Responsibility: – Planner signed nightly – Complete ALL H.W. – Take A.R. Tests without teacher prompting – All class work is turned in – Follow morning procedures Increased H.W.: – 30 minutes of independent reading daily – 20- 30 minutes of math – 20- 30 minutes of reading (other than independent reading) – 20-30 minutes of Science/ S.S./ or Health (sometimes) End of Grade Tests: – Or E.O.G. for short – All encompassing test for Reading and Math – Math much more rigorous than in years past

4. 3 rd grade Reading Gateway Your child MUST be on grade level by the end of the school year or we are not allowed to let them pass on (new federal law). EOG will determine this Parent meeting in September How can we help: – Students naturally grow the more they read books on their level – Make sure they are reading grade level appropriate text at home – Use AR to help give incentive to read

6. Accelerated Reader Take basic comprehension tests on the computers at school. They do this by themselves – Read these books at home – Keep track of the book and author on reading log in H.W. folder To find out if a book is AR: – www.arbookfind.com www.arbookfind.com They will be given a goal to reach each nine weeks You get points based on what percentage you get on the test – 0.5 pt. book 100% = 0.5 pts 80%= 0.4 pts 60%= 0.3 pts 50% an below= 0 pts

Accelerated Reader Points goal: – 1 st 9 weeks- 10 points – 2 nd - 4 th 9 weeks- based on their reading abilities Most third grade books are 0.5 pts 10 pts= 20 books ( 100% on each test) Percentage goal (average of all tests taken): – 1 st 9 weeks- 77% – 2 nd 9 weeks- 78% – 3 rd 9 weeks- 79% – 4 th 9 weeks- 80% Must make both parts of the goal to get to go to the AR celebration! – Those that don’t make AR goal will be in a classroom where they read AR books and take AR tests to try and catch up!

8. Flipped Out! I use the Flipped Classroom approach in my class room – Mostly in my math instruction though I am researching ways to use it in other areas What is it? – Essentially it means that your child will do the boring note taking at home Why do you so this? – So we have more time to practice and master the skills at school with me – It allows to have more one on one time with your child Every night? – No, the more topics that we are covering in a week the more videos they will have – Most likely 1 or 2 times a week (the other nights will be “normal” homework)

9. Flipped Out! (cont.) Oh no I have no internet!! – I can load the video onto a flash drive – Sign a permission slip I do not have a computer or internet! – Make friends with a neighbor – Have your child in my room at 8:00am with a note or email to me What can I do to help me child with their video HW? – Make sure they have all their notes when they come back to school – Make sure they listen and watch all the information Where can I learn more about this? – Check out my website I have lots of links to more info.

10. Behavior Plan Student can see there behavior choices by “clipping up” or “clipping down” Specific punishments and rewards are related with each color! Punishment: Reflection of poor behavior (to be signed by parents) Parent Communication Discipline referral My class rewards: Lotto Scratcher !!!!! Could receive: Pencil Eraser Small Treasure Box Pass Big Treasure Box Pass

11. Planner Your child will be expected to keep up with a planner – They will have to write their homework down every night – They need to get a parent or guardian to sign the planner nightly – Their daily behavior report will be in there: Color will be colored in For bad behavior an explanation of what happened will be in there They are to be bought from the school Cost: $ 4 (cash only) You can buy them on the first day of school – Just send in the money and I will get them from the office and send them home to you – They will need these the first day of school!!

12. Communication I love to stay in touch with parents Can call or write notes Best way to get in touch with me is email (in pamphlet) Email paper in folder – Please return ASAP – Make sure my email in entered in your contacts or I could be filtered out Newsletter: – I send out a weekly newsletter/ reminders email – If you don’t get email I can print it out and put in planner for you to have copy

13. Homebase! Will still have websites – On pamphlet Check grades for all you children Hand out on folder with instruction and your child’s personal info Bottom of letter must be returned ASAP

14. Dress Code!!! Sleeves shirts/ dresses: – Straps must be 3 fingers wide Your child’s “outer most garment” – should no more than 3 inches above the knee (even with tights or leggings underneath) If clothes are not appropriate parents will be contacted to bring new clothes

15. Parent Volunteers NEEDED!!! Having parent volunteers are GREAT Sign up online – If you were approved last year you are fine this year Things you could do: – Send in supplies – Help in special centers in class – Field day – Coordinate AR celebrations – Send in food/ snacks – Go on field trips

17. A few pieces of information from the school. Remediation time of Tuesday and Thursday (tentatively) Car Rider Line: – Make sure teacher signs are visible – Parents are expected to stay in their cars and go through the line. – 3 rd graders are picked up in the 2 nd line (bus lot) unless with K-2 sibling – No parent is allowed to walk up and get there child any more – Safety
