2 Purpose of an Outdoor Camp Experience Rationale: The school’s camping program enables students to further their learning and social skills development in a non-school setting. Camps may have a cultural, environmental or outdoor emphasis and are an important aspect of the educational programs offered at our school. Aims: To provide all children with the opportunity to participate in a sequential camping program. To provide shared class experiences and a sense of group cohesiveness. To reinforce and extend classroom learning. To provide a program that delivers skills and knowledge that may lead to a lifelong involvement in worthwhile leisure pursuits. To provide a program that promotes self-esteem, resourcefulness, independence, leadership, judgement, cooperation and tolerance.

3 What do we do? Derby Hill Blue Light Youth Camp is an exciting camp developed in cooperation with Victoria Police, the Victorian Government and the Blue Light Organisation. Blue Light Organisation The Derby Hill complex is located in Maldon complex was built in 1987 and was designed in the style of the original Derby Hill Gold Mine. The centre is situated in central Maldon and has nine accommodation units and a central dining hall, games room and pool room.

10 WHAT TO TAKE: Sleeping bag, pillow, top sheet for mattress and a blanket for cooler weather Toiletries – shampoo, soap, toothbrush / toothpaste, tissues or handkerchief, (NO AEROSOL CANS) 1 x Towel Thongs for shower (optional) Shirts / blouses / T-shirts – suitable for bike riding Waterproof jacket Jumper Torch with new batteries Plastic bags for soiled and wet clothes Long pants and shorts suitable for bike riding Hat and sunscreen Tracksuit Pyjamas and slippers for inside, as carpeted rooms are a “NO SHOE’ zone Shoes for bike riding Underwear and socks Camera (optional) and knowledge of how to use it. 1 Book for quiet reading. Drink Bottle 1 Pencil Case with Pencils Extra Runners (old ones that can get wet!) Approved Bike Helmet for all bike riding activities Gloves suitable for bike riding

11 Medication Please ensure you advise staff of any medication your child needs. All medication must be in its original packaging with dosage and times and must be handed to Moya Lythgo for the Grade 4 camp and to Betty Tzelepis for the Grade 5/6 camp. It must be in a named bag with the medication request notice included. Please fill out a form giving permission for staff to give your child paracetamol so that if they have a fever or a headache we can provide them with some relief on camp. Please provide this notice and the medication to Moya and Betty on the day of departure.

12 What not to bring Students are asked not to bring radios, cd players, ipods, mp3 players, electronic games, mobile telephones, aerosol cans or lollies. No nuts or nut products are to be brought to the camp.

13 Frequently asked questions What will happen if my child is ill or hurt? You will be contacted and asked what you would like to happen and you may be asked to come from collect your child from the camp. If it is an emergency, it will be dealt with the same way we do at school and an ambulance will be called and your child will be taken to the hospital. Can I call my child at camp? You make a call to Ruth Vonarx mobile number 0400 850 188 in early morning or early evening. Please don’t call if you don’t need to as this is an opportunity for your child to experience independence.

14 Does my child need to bring their bike or helmet? No bikes required. If your child has an Australian Approved helmet they should bring it otherwise helmets will be supplied. What time do the children go to bed? Children will be in bed by 8:45 and asleep by 9:30ish. Staff sit in each room until all children are asleep. We explain to the students that some students require all the sleep they can get in order to stay healthy and happy(not sleep deprived grumpy!). All through the night teachers get up and check that all the children are okay and sleeping well.

15 What if my child gets homesick? Our approach differs depending on the child and their needs. Mostly we encourage helpful self talk about how we could think differently about the situation. We might make a phone call home if we think that would help your child. How many people in a cabin? The cabins house between 8-12 students. The male and female teachers cabins are central and near all the other cabins.

16 What if my child wets the bed? Early in the morning we check the bedding of students we know who sometimes wet their bed and very quietly get them up and change them before the rest of the cabin awakes. Some students who are worried about wetting the bed wear pull ups under their PJ’s. They take their pull ups off in their sleeping bag before getting out to get dressed. The teachers then quietly collect the pull ups out of the sleeping bags whilst children are having breakfast.

17 Can my child bring money to camp? There will be no opportunities for students to spend money when on camp. In previous years some students did visit the boiled lolly shop as part of their Maldon Treasure Hunt experience. In line with our new Healthy Food Policy students will no longer be able purchase lollies.

18 What if my child misbehaves on camp? Disrespectful or unsafe behaviour will not tolerated. You will be called to come and collect your child if this happens as all the other children and staff have the right to enjoy their outdoor education experience. Your child must be able to carry their own luggage! If your child is not able to work out what clothes to wear each day give them a labelled plastic bag for each day! NAME EVERY ARTICLE-including towels, undies and socks!
