Neon Have you ever walked down the street at night and seen a bright, colored light in the display window of a store or restaurant? It may have been shaped in the form of an open sign of in the likeness of brand of alcoholic beverage. You have just witnessed the power of neon! Quick Side Note: Neon signs are only orange. This background (and ones like it) is made with different types of gases in the same process that neon lightning is created. This will be discussed later.

(Cont.) Neon was discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsey and Morris W. Travers. It means ‘new’ in the Greek language…

What is Neon? Atomic Number: 10 Atomic Weight: 20.1797 Melting Point: 24.56 K (-248.59°C or -415.46°F) Boiling Point: 27.07 K (-246.08°C or -410.94°F) Density: 0.0008999 grams per cubic centimeter Phase at Room Temperature: Gas Element Classification: Non- metal Period Number: 2 Group Number: 18 Group Name: Noble Gas

Did you know? Neon is actually a colorless gas that comes from rocks in the Earth's crust. It is also found in liquefied air. It is often industrially produced by extraction from the air.

What is Neon Used For? ADVERTISTING SIGNS (MAJORITY) INDICATIORS LIGHTNINGS ARRESTORS WAVER METER TUBES USED IN GAS LASERS CRYOGENIC REFRIGERATION

HOW DO NEON LIGHTS WORK? NOTE: THE COLOR OF GAS DISCHARGE IS DEPENDENT ON THE ELEMENT INSIDE One can create the neon produces (orange) by applying only a small electric voltage to electrodes the ends of a glass tube containing the gas (such as helium or neon).
