11 Metropole Ruhr | Infrastructure
Transport links at a glance Common carrier road Common carrier rail Common carrier water Air traffic

12 Metropole Ruhr | Transport links at a glance
The Metropole Ruhr is one of Europe's best connected regions in terms of transport: a dense road network (4,664 km of regional roads) the strongest rail infrastructure (i.e. 1,600 km of rails with 70 stations and 5 larger formation yards) the most dense system of canals and ports (572 km of waterways) the largest inland port and biggest canal port as well as highest-level transport association in Europe an international (Dortmund) and a national airport (Essen/Mülheim) in the region the international airports of Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn are easily reached

13 Metropole Ruhr | Common carrier road
3.1 million domestic vehicles use 4,600 km of interregional roads, one vehicle per 1.7 inhabitants Comment: 12.9% of the interregional network of the total of 4,664 km federal, country and district roads are autobahn (source: Zahlenspiegel Metropole Ruhr (2007)). With this, in relation to the surface area, the region has the densest but also most heavily-used autobahn network in Germany. A further 15.3% (713 km) of the roads are federal highways, 43% (2,005 km) country roads and 28.8% (1,340 km) district roads. The foundation of the autobahn network consists of a triangle formed by the autobahns 1, 2 and 3. Alongside the autobahns 4, 44, 45, 57 and 61 these also constitute the most significant connections to other conurbations in Germany and neighbouring foreign countries. Numerous other autobahns and a number of uninterrupted federal roads add further density to the network of fast roads within the region, which is of great significance to regional and local traffic due to the short distances between the junctions. 14 Metropole Ruhr | Common carrier rail
Comment: The rail network has a density that is higher than average. In freight traffic the railways are used in particular for connecting distant economic locations and handling transport to and from the sea ports. In addition to the DB AG network in the region, rail freight traffic can also take advantage of various non-state railway networks in the region (NE rail). These networks were primarily created with a strong focus on the mining industry. Some of the private rail companies have extensive rail networks of their own. Marshalling yards: Metropole Ruhr boasts five major marshalling yards: Hamm, Wanne-Eickel, Oberhausen-Osterfeld, Schwerte and Hagen. Container terminals: Container terminals for combined traffic are operated by Deutsche Bahn AG and other companies at the sites of Duisburg-Ruhrort, Duisburg-Rheinhausen, Voerde- Emmelsum, Hagen, Herne-Wanne and the port of Dortmund. * Two changes of train necessary Map: © Regionalverband Ruhr, 2010

15 Metropole Ruhr | Common carrier rail
The rail network of the Metropole Ruhr consists of: 1,600 km of rails more than 70 stations of Deutsche Bahn AG 12 ICE / IC lines 15 regional express lines 22 regional connection and 11 S-Bahn lines Comment: Public transport is primarily organised by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) transport association. With a traffic area of 5,027 km2 encompassing 16 towns and cities and five districts with approximately 7.3 million inhabitants, the VRR district extends considerably beyond the Metropole Ruhr itself. In the VRR are 27 municipal transport companies and six rail transport companies (of which 15 are based in the Metropole Ruhr (status August 2010). 19 urban light railways, 45 tram services and 854 bus services operate in the Metropole Ruhr. Public transport in the region can make use of the approximately 1,600 km rail network of DB AG. Long distance traffic in the Metropole Ruhr is handled by seven ICE and five IC services. In the regional transport organised by the VRR transport association a distinction is made between the levels of the regional express (15 services) and regional rail trains (22 services), as well as the S-Bahn urban rail system (11 services). There is a total of 70 railway stations, over which the long-distance traffic, public transport and, above all, commuter traffic between the towns and cities of the region is handled. ICE, IC and EC trains stop at eleven railway stations.

16 Metropole Ruhr | Common carrier water
With a waterways network of 572 km in length, the Metropole Ruhr has the most dense canal and port system in Europe. Comment: Based on the requirements of the steel and coal mining industries a dense network of ports and canals developed in the Metropole Ruhr, with this utilised today by modern logistics enterprises. Around 272 km of inland waterways with a series of ports and transshipment facilities constitute one of the key bases for transport infrastructure and form the densest system of ports and canals in Europe. In addition to the Rhine and the navigable part of the Ruhr, the region is also crossed by the Wesel-Datteln canal, the Datteln-Hamm canal, the Dortmund-Ems canal and the Rhein-Herne canal. Map: © Regionalverband Ruhr, 2010

62 Metropole Ruhr | Cutting-edge technology – MST & nanotechnology
Location: Microsystems technology (MST) and nanotechnology are cross-sectional technologies with a high degree of innovative content They promote added value at the interfaces to energy, chemicals, logistics, medical technology, IT, materials technology Optimal linking of companies and science via cluster management; locally strong individual activities e.g. in Dortmund and Duisburg Dortmund MST cluster is one of the three largest in Europe, currently numbering 40 companies MST.factory dortmund: first European centre of excellence for microtechnology and nanotechnology. Provision of devices, office, laboratory and clean room space for start-ups and technology companies for product development, up to series-production readiness, awarded the EUROCITIES AWARD for this concept in 2006 Example: “workbench“ for processing nanomaterials: a Focused Ion Beam- device (FIB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen is used, amongst other purposes, to develop innovative concepts for information processing Microsystems technology = collective term for a range of individual technologies that deal with particularly small components. Microsystems technology is a part of the field of microtechnology and deals with the development and production of microsystems. Micro technology covers the fields of microsensors, micro-optics, micromechanics, microfluids and micro-electronics. Nanotechnology = Nanotechnology (Greek νᾶνος nános “dwarf“) is the term now used to refer to research into cluster physics and surface physics, surface chemistry, semiconductor physics, in fields of chemistry and, so far to a limited extent, areas of engineering and food technology (nano food). The collective term is based on the size of individual atoms up to a structural size of 100 nanometres (nm) employed in all areas of nano research. One nanometre is one billionth of a metre (10−9 m). This size scale characterises a threshold range in which the surface characteristics compared to the volume characteristics play an increasingly important role, with quantum physical effects also increasingly taken into consideration. In nanotechnology there are therefore length scales involved where the size in particular determines the characteristics of an object. “Size-induced functionalities“ are referred to.
