1 Safe Working Procedure – Working Environment Learning Objectives: By the end of this program participants will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the control measures to be followed, as detailed in the safe working procedure, in order to provide and maintain a safe and healthy working environment. To begin we will consider the OAC model for managing safety

3 Set your work objectives to include; “...tasks/ activities are to be completed on time and in a manner that does not cause harm to the employees, customers, other non- employees, or the company/ organisation.” Three key questions to start with are… What can cause harm? What are you doing about it? Is it enough? Remember the process is simple but it is NOT to be considered simplistic. Safe Working Procedure - Working Environment

5 Know where the harm is; Identify the key hazards & outcomes of exposure to workplace hazards. Source of Hazards (non-exhaustive list) Cleanliness of premises Waste, dirt & refuse Spillage & Tripping hazards Floors & floor surfaces (levels, openings,etc.) Ramps, gangways & roadways Steps, corners & fixed obstacles Height & suitability of seating/benches Location of machine controls & instrumentation Lighting (including emergency lighting) Work space, furniture and tool storage Glass doors Edges (e.g. of pits) Weather conditions, Temperature Noise and ventilation Outcomes of exposure (non-exhaustive list) Infection and disease Slips, trips and falls Entrapment and entanglement Cuts and bruises Asphyxiation Crushing Electrocution Noise induced deafness Safe Working Procedure - Working Environment

6 Controlling the Hazard - Options In priority order; 1.Eliminate where possible, 2.Use control measures, 3.Protect all those exposed to the hazard Insert eliminate image Insert control image Insert protective Clothing image Safe Working Procedure - Working Environment

7 Workplace inspections Carry out regular workplace OHS inspections and tests. Where the business activity is construction or when construction is underway the inspection arrangements are to be detailed in the construction OHS plan. Environmental Conditions Ensure that, where applicable, the effect of weather conditions, including wind, rain, snow & ice, on the business activity is taken into account before any work starts.
