Regular Past Participles The -ed Verbs used as Adjectives Essential Grammar #106
2
Definition In both Spanish and English, past participles are quite handy to use. Not only can they be used as parts of verbs (and not just for speaking about the past), they can also be used to create adjectives.
3
¿Cómo se forma? In English, the past participle for regular verbs is formed by adding "-ed" to the end. When past participles are used as adjectives, they agree in number and gender with the noun they modify.
4
How to make the past participle The past participle for regular verbs is formed by… adding -ado to the stem of -ar verbs; adding -ido to the stem of –er, -ir verbs. * When –ido, is preceded by a vowel (other than u) add an accent to – ído. Ejemplos: creer > creído oír > oído leer > leído caer > caído PERO construir > construído
5
Regular Past Participles They have different uses: 1. When used with the conjugated form of the verb Haber, past participles do not show agreement! (It is the Perfect tense and it is part of a verb phrase!)
6
2. When used with passive voice, past participles show agreement with subject. Ejemplos: Tú ya has comido el almuerzo, ¿verdad? (You already have eaten lunch, right?)
