The Sport Enterprise u In 2001, $ 3.5 billion was spent on fitness equipment, both home and institutional. u In 2001, sales of athletic footwear topped $15.4 billion; running shoes being most popular. u In 2001, $11.45 billion done in sales of sports licensed products. u Sports and fitness are BIG business!

Sport Spectator Interest u Attendance at sports events is rising and approaching all-time highs. u Men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments were sold out. u More than 20 million fans attended regular season NBA games. u The media---television, newspapers, magazines, books, and movies---have come to play an enormous role in the world of sports.

Sports and the Media u Networks paid $17.6 billion to the NFL for broadcast rights through 2005. u NBC paid $2.6 billion for broadcast rights for the Olympic Games through 2008. u CBS paid $6 billion to telecast the NCAA men’s basketball tournament for 11 years.

Careers in Sport Management u Director of Corporate Recreation ä Provide recreational and sport opportunities for those in the corporate setting. ä Set up teams, schedule contests, provide instruction, and supervise. u Sport Facilities Management ä Found in almost any setting; the primary concern is the safety of the individuals using the facility through knowledge of building codes, health and sanitation requirements, and certain laws. ä Scheduling of events, ticket sales, concessions, or parking. u Sport Retailing ä The sale of sporting goods ä Creation of new markets with the increase of active women. ä Salespersons and manufacturers’ representatives

Career Opportunities in Professional Organizations u AAPHERD, NCAA, NFSHSA, LPGA, USTA, NHL, etc… u Athletic conferences (Commissioner of Big Ten, etc…) u Foundations such as the Women’s Sport Foundation u Entry level jobs deal with day-to-day operations. u Fundraising, public relations, conducting membership drives, writing and editing publications, and analyzing statistical data.

Careers in Sport Media u Sport Broadcasting ä Requires knowledge of the game: skills, strategies, rules, officiating ä Ability to communicate clearly. ä National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) u Sportswriting and Journalism ä May cover events live or write feature articles. ä Research stories, compile statistics, interview athletes and coaches ä Ability to meet deadlines while traveling and working long hours. u Sport Photography ä Newspapers, sport publications, and freelance work ä Maintain portfolio of work, gain practical experience

Careers in Sport Media u Sports Information Director ä Promote athletic events through various forms of media. ä Maintain records, compile statistics, prepare promotional brochures, game-day programs, maintain web pages. ä Writes press releases, and arranges press conferences/interviews ä College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) u Web Developer ä Design, create, and update sites for college athletic departments, professional teams, sports organizations, newspapers, and television networks.

Performance and Other Sport Careers u Dance Careers ä Professional dancer, dance teacher, dance therapist, or dance administration in dance companies u Professional Athletics ä Only 1.3% of NCAA men’s basketball players go pro; football--- 2%, baseball---10.5%, although opportunities are growing. u Officiating ä Part-time or full-time careers ä Certification required at most levels---must know rules of sport as well as good officiating mechanics. u Sport Law ä Requires completion of law school ä Teach classes in sport law and management or become agents for professional athletes: negotiate contracts and financial consultants
