 Originally named “Grass woman”.  Born in 1784.  She was kidnapped by the Minataree tribe.  She was won in a game by a White Settler.  Her name was changed to Sacagawea when she was 16 years old.  She was a guide to Lewis and Clark on their expedition; she brought her husband and baby.  She stayed calm and saved her husband from drowning.  She was admired because she was calm and collected even through rough and dangerous situations. 4

 She was bilingual, so she could communicate with other tribes.  She knew which plants and berries were edible and kept everyone from starving.  She was able to guide the group of explorers back to their supplies that they had dropped off.  She was able to help navigate the explorers through safe terrain; keeping them out of harms way.  She is credited with being the sole reason as to how Lewis and Clark were able to have a successful journey. 5

 Record Keeper- Writes down and records all of the students arguments during the debate.  Facilitator-Keeps the debate moving along. Also making sure that it stays respectful and on task.  Host- Generates questions for everyone to answer. Recaps main arguments and who had the best overall argument per question. 6

 Chosen by President Jefferson to lead the Expedition.  He set up supplies and food for the trip.  He met with Native Americans to set up a guide for the expedition; recruiting Sacagawea.  He kept journals and records of everything that happened along the way; used today as major resources.  He travelled for a year and a half and over 4,000 miles.  Was appointed Governorship of the Louisiana territory. 8

 Our group chose Meriwether Lewis to be celebrated on May 14 th, the anniversary of when he set out on his journey in 1804. We chose him because he was picked by the President and had to take many courses and trainings to be chosen. We felt that he had a lot of experience and showed great bravery when exploring the west. We felt that he stood out because he was the one who set up all the supplies for the trip and made communication with Native American tribes, thus meeting Sacagawea who made the trip possible.  I did not end up changing my mind on wanting Sacagawea to be celebrated because I still feel as though the whole trip would have not been successful if she had not been guiding it. 9
