2 History 1876 – Opening of state’s first civilian hospital named Charlotte Home and Hospital 1982 - Tree of Life logo was introduced and has 9 branches which symbolize courage, wisdom, kindness, humility, gentleness, loyalty, prudence, generosity and justice 1990 – Hospital name changed to its current name as Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) after several name changes throughout its history

3 History (cont.) 1996 – Carolinas HealthCare System name began to be used to describe the network of locations associated with CMC 1997 – Levine Children’s Hospital opened to patients 2010 – Levine Cancer Institute was formed 2010 – CMC designated as the Charlotte campus of UNC School of Medicine 2015 – Currently 39 hospitals operating in the Carolinas HealthCare System
