Pablo Picasso Born in Malaga Spain 1881-1973 He spent most of his life in France, although he is considered a Spanish painter. Picasso created tens of thousands of pieces of artwork. He is considered the most famous of modern day artists.

Picasso’s Blue Period Early in his work. The Blue period focused on serious painting using blues and greens. Picasso focused on painting the lives of the poor and distressed.

Cubism Picasso was the founding father of the cubist movement in painting. This was a revolutionary style of art. View some of the following examples of cubism. Which do you find the most interesting and why?

The Infamous Guernica During the Spanish Civil War, the city of Guernica was bombed. There were many innocent people killed. Picasso painted one of his most famous paintings, Guernica. Along with showing the tragedy of this bombing, it shows the brutality and inhumanity of war in general. What do you think of Guernica?

If you recall, we saw Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas. This painting is considered a master piece and many artists will re-create masterpieces, but in their own style. These are Picasso’s versions of Las Meninas.
